Winter heralds the truffle season in Australia. Thanks to the good folks at Truffle Melbourne, there are many truffle-inspired events taking place in Melbourne. Activities are also taking place in Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula. You can enjoy a free truffle festival in Prahran Market, cooking lesson at The Craft & Co, truffle degustation among the vines and tasting with Rodney Dunn, just to name a few.

What better way to come up-close to this aromatic fungi in Melbourne than with a truffle hunt. Black Cat Truffles, just a drive from the city or Ballarat, is offering 2 opportunities to wrap your fingers around some freshly dug out truffles and learn the best way to cook with them.

1) Truffle Hunt

Pull on the winter jacket and gum boots, and head out to the Black Cat Truffle's truffiere with the dogs. Join in their hunt for black truffles as they pick up the scent beneath the host trees. Then escort the spoils back to the house for some truffle tastings. Click here to reserve your space

2) Truffle Hunt Cooking Class

Black Cat Truffles is also hosting a cooking class in addition to the truffle hunt. The class will be conducted by well-known Ballarat chef Peter Ford. You will join the dogs and dig for the black truffles and return to the kitchen with your spoils. Peter will discuss how best to use them and share some simple dishes that highlight the truffles, followed by tastings. Click here to reserve your space.

I didn't know dogs could sniff out truffles, or that we grew them here in Victoria.
