Yarrawonga's Peter Thompson-designed Black Bull Golf Course is the centre piece of the Silverwoods Golf and Lifestyle Resort right on the southern shore of Lake Mulwala and just 2.5 kms east of Yarrawonga's CBD on the Murray Valley Highway.

The 6256 metre Par 72 course is classified a Resort Links with carpet-like Grand Prix couch fairways and lively G2 Bent greens.

It's a challenging course with wide sweeping fairways and plenty of bunkers plus water hazards all strategically positioned to capture any wayward shots.

The Bull Ring is a testing little section comprising the 4th, 5th and 6th holes.

The 4th is a daunting 179 metre overwater Par 3, the 5th a 353 metre Par 4 with bunkers and water up the right side and the 6th another Par 4 390 metres with fairway bunkers left & right and water behind a bunkered green. You'll need to be on your toes through here – No Bull!

It's worth noting too that the Black Bull's website and card euphemistically ask golfers to "be aware of the native fauna & flora" that call the course home. In other words, keep a wary eye out for snakes in the warmer months.

An excellent undercover driving range, practice putting greens & bunkers ensure you'll be properly warmed-up before you hit the first tee.

The Black Bull pro shop offers coaching and club-fitting services together with a broad range of merchandise to ensure you hit the fairways fully and properly equipped. Clubs, carts and buggies are all available for hire.

Green fees and hire charges are:

9 Holes – Adults $25, Juniors $10
18 Holes – Adults $45, Juniors $20
Club Hire 9 Holes $15, 18 Holes $20
Cart Hire 9 Holes $22, 18 Holes $40
Buggy Hire 9 Holes $3, 18 Holes $5

Best of all an annexe to the pro shop is a well-stocked 19th hole open to members and visitors alike.

The twin towns or Yarrawonga and Mulwala are just over 3 hours drive north of Melbourne via the Hume and Goulbourn Valley Freeways or via the Hume Freeway to Benalla then the C373 to Yarrawonga. Both boast a broad range of accommodation options together with a variety of excellent sports and service clubs.

It's a great weekend away destination and, for golfers anyway, the Black Bull is just the icing on the cake.
