As one of the world's leading research facilities devoted to the preservation of materials on the global African and African diasporan experiences, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is a focal point of the cultural life of Harlem. This research unit of The New York Public Library sponsors many programs and events that showcase the richness of black history and culture including the recent 'i found god in myself' exhibition that celebrates the 40th anniversary of American playwright and poet Ntozake Shange's choreopoem and the free film screening of Miners Shot Down from South Africa.

This November, the Center will bring together with a team of accomplished visual artists to discuss racial, gender and class politics and influence on their cultural productions.

  • Renee Cox - This photographer and mixed-media artist is one of the most controversial African-American artists working today, and best known for her 'Yo Mama's Last Supper' exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City in 2001. She celebrates black womanhood and abhors a racist and sexist society.

  • Dianne Smith - A 20-year career abstract painter, sculptor, installation artist and cultural worker, Dianne has exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions in numerous galleries, museums and public spaces.

  • Hank Willis Thomas - This photo conceptual artist works primarily with themes revolving around identity, history and popular culture. Thomas' work has been exhibited around the country and abroad in Paris and Milan, and in numerous public collections including The Museum of Modern Art New York, The Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The High Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

  • Bayeté Ross Smith - Originally a photojournalist, Bayeté is an accomplished visual artist, multi-media artist and photographer today. His work has been exhibited at the 2008 and 2012 Sundance Film Festival, the Oakland Museum of California, the Brooklyn Museum, Rush Arts Gallery, the Goethe Institute in Ghana and Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Poland .

  • Don't miss this FREE talk on Black Art and Identity Politics in New York with Renne Cox, Dianne Smith, Hank Willis Thomas and Bayete Ross Smith. Reservations are essential and on a first come, first served basis. All registered seats are released 15 to 30 minutes before start time so make sure you arrive early.
