The dam is named after the deceased QLD state premier, Sir Bjelke-Petersen. He lived in the area and was fiercely pro-development. It was finished in 1988 with the dam spillway being raised in 2007.

The dam in Moffatdale was built on Lake Barambah and named after one of the first cattle stations to be established in the area. Barambah is an Aboriginal word meaning "A place where the water ripples".

The water from the lake is used for irrigation and water supply to the local towns of Murgon and Cherbourg and covers 2,500 hectares. It is well stocked with a great variety of fish with Yellow Belly fish being the favourite. However, a permit is required to fish in the dam.

Yallakool Caravan Park is situated in a recreational park on the banks of the dam. As the dam is surrounded by natural Australian bushland it is a haven for wildlife. Across the spillway, there is a lovely picnic area all under shady trees. An amenities block, gas BBQs, picnic seats and tables plus a boat ramp make this an excellent place for a quiet day out.

For those who wish to stay longer at the caravan park, there are a few interesting places nearby to visit. Murgon,15 kms away is your go-to place for shopping. Cherbourg, on the banks of the lake is an Aboriginal Reserve established in 1941. A visit to their Ration Shed museum is a must for those interested in the history of Cherbourg. There are some wineries and other museums also close by.
