Sydney Fringe Festival presents Miss Zella Shear in her cabaret Bite Me but Smile at NIDA Studio Theatre, a single woman who holds no barred when it comes to personal restraint of love, dating and food.

It's been a hectic week dealing with kids' fevers and coughs compared to the smooth drive to the NIDA Studio Theatre, thank goodness for school holidays. A simple backdrop of a red throne surrounded with a few tables and chairs sets the stage as well as tiered seating for the audience.

From the moment go, we're plunged into morsels of conversations before Miss Zella announces her entry via song to take us on a journey that'll make you laugh, cringe and downright relate to.

Imagine a young woman in her prime who wants to perform opera, jazz, pop, burlesque with cracking wit in under 50 minutes. Hang onto your partners, hubbies and boyfriends as a judgemental talking kebab might come your way with Miss Zella Shear close by to snap up any potential suitors which will keep you on your toes.

Bite Me But Smile cabaret explores self-love as Miss Zella sings a love song to her pink phallic vibrator and reveals her dog keeps her company. After her breakup with Johnny, Zella delves in eating alone foods of Vegemite on toast, red wine, Nutella, beer living amongst the age of influencers and hashtags and let us not forget the talking kebab.

With such vulnerability being put on show, Miss Zella performs through singing Just Shine made famous by Nat King Cole and every girl's dream of Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend. From comedy one minute and riveting renditions of Ave Marie next and an equally dramatic ending, you are hard-pressed to know what's next in Miss Zella Shear's bag of tricks.

The cabaret was a refreshing entertainment with the only irritating fact that this show needs to be seen by the masses. Shearer is a talented performer but don't take my word for it and see her at the next performance in Brisbane THU 21–SUN 24 NOV, 2019 .

Don't forget your sparkly pants and possibly a raincoat… that will be enough to pique your interest.

See the show for yourself.
