Take a journey along the Mekong River

Sydney's multicultural society is fortunate to experience so many different cuisines which have made our palates that much more demanding. The majority of us love the spices and freshness of Asian fusion cuisine and now more often than not, we will choose an Asian restaurant when dining out.

Bistro Mekong is new to Sydney's North Shore. The Opening VIP launch was held on Tuesday evening inside Castlecrag Quadrangle Village. Taste buds were salivating with anticipation, as several guests were already aware of the success of sister restaurant Mekong, located in Chippendale's trendy Kensington Street and knew they were in for a special treat.

On arrival, we were offered cocktails from a carefully curated selection designed by Sydney's celebrated mixologist, Grant Collins.

Four signature creations were on offer to pair with the canapes. We started with the Bistro Mekong 'A Smoked & Spiced Margarita containing 5 spiced gold tequila, Cointreau, house spice syrup, fresh pressed citrus and smoked spiced rim.

My favourite was the Vanilla & Citrus Passion - Vanilla and passionfruit infused vodka with cold pressed citrus and apple juice.

There was also a selection of wines and no alcoholic cocktails on offer.

Head Chef Tiw Rakarin treated VIP guests to selected canapes inspired by Indochine flavours from different Asian cuisines found along the Mekong River - Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Each canape was designed to entice the taste buds and they didn't fail to impress. They flew off the platters quicker than you could say delicious.

Grilled Scallops with bacon oil, yuzu chilli sauce and fried shallots served on a bed of coconut salad. These went too quick, I could have eaten a complete tray.

"So many Australians love travelling around Asia" said owner and founder of Chippendale's Mekong and Bistro Mekong Dr Stanley Quek. "By bringing Mekong to Castlecrag, I'm hoping to encourage Australians to challenge their taste buds and try new cuisines. Castlecrag is like a little oasis relaxed and sophisticated, at the same time. It fitted with our vision for Bistro Mekong perfectly, and I think will be a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood's budding food scene."

I have to agree that Bistro Mekong is set to win the hearts of the North Shore locals. The location inside the revamped Quadrangle Shopping Village offers patrons an alfresco dining experience away from the busy main road, perfect for a casual dinner for couples or families.

The menu has a variety of dishes to suit all tastes, whether you are a lover of seafood or prefer the bolder flavours of Cambodian and Thai curries. There are also plenty of vegetarian options. Families will feel welcome with a choice of kid-friendly dishes such as pork and prawn dumplings, egg fried rice served with Chinese greens or some Vietnamese fresh spring rolls with vermicelli noodles.

Bistro Mekong is also planning on holding a regional dinner series once a month and offering weekly dinner specials that will really appeal to families. Like the Bistro Mekong Facebook page and be the first to know about their specials.

I will definitely be back soon to work my way through the delicious menu.
