I had better preface this by saying that nobody in this oddly named Japanese bistro in Nobby's Beach will ever actually know your name. There is no baseball memorabilia, no Norm standees propping up the bar, no Woody lookalike pouring beers. The good news is that these are likely to be the only disappointments that anyone experiences at Cheers, which serves up a strange range of very tasty fusion meals at moderate prices.

For the diminutive size of the place, an unexpectedly large array of wholly Japanese dishes such as sushi, sashimi, tempura sit side by side on a menu that also includes Chinese style sizzling fish or meat coming out drenched in garlic butter or the sauce of your choice, an array of pasta dishes, grilled steak, salads, and also some unclassifiable items such as the deep fried tempura camembert in seaweed. The plates that we shared were all either deep fried or swimming in a buttery sauce, (with the exception of the tuna sashimi which was fresh and light) making this more of an "occasional treat" stop in rather than a regular haunt.

The light crisp batter on the soft shell crab perfectly complements the juicy, sweet meat underneath. Everything we ate was tasty but I think I would have been happy with just half a dozen or so of the soft shell crabs lined up one after the other. My partner nearly lost a finger to my eager chopsticks as we fought over the last leg. Sake lovers will appreciate being able to sample some different flavours with their meals, and there are a range of wines and Japanese beers on offer as well. You can BYO wine only, but there was about a $3 corkage charge from memory.

The service was quick and delightful. "Cheer"ful, you might even say! Unfortunately our fried camembert came out cold and we had to ask for a fresh one, which wasn't the greatest beginning to the evening, but the server was genuinely mortified and the replacement was good enough for us to ignore the false start. It's a cozy place, with chairs and tables within quite a close proximity to one another. If we had people surrounding us I might have felt less comfortable, but it was a quiet night.

This is a great choice if you're in Nobbys and feel like something out of the usual. It would take a while to work through all the different menu options and would be an enjoyable, if probably fattening, experience. There are a range of prices as well as cuisines available, with mains starting from $11 and going up to $40. So it's a great place to take a mixed group with mixed tastes and budgets. I'll definitely be going back to sample some more.
