Kids and adults alike - let's eat some cake

As much as plain old chocolate cake with hundreds and thousands is delicious, it might not make the cut (no pun intended) when it comes to the most decorative birthday cakes for kids. Birthday cakes have come a long way. No more do parents need to worry about plain sponge cakes with icing and lollies decorated on top.

If you're on a budget and are planning a fuss free party, these cakes are quite good, yet for a party to remember, your guide is below. As a parent, if you're determined to ensure that your child has a cake to remember and devour, you will find a way to make the magic happen.

1. Cartoon Characters

The Wiggles will remain in vogue in terms of children's cartoon characters. Current trends include Dorothy the Dinosaur and some timeless classics such as any of the Disney, Looney Tunes and Sesame Street characters. It took one of my friends around two years, despite being a professional caterer to create a magical Cinderella birthday cake for my niece a couple of years ago. She was delighted, and so were all of us. Feel free to take a look at this awe inspiring Cinderella Birthday Cake by clicking here. Such a gorgeous cake, a real treasure. The cake was a real hit among adults and children alike. Otherwise, if you prefer someone else to make such a birthday cake for you, you can also talk to your local patisserie. If you ask at Michel's Patisserie, in many cases they do customise such cakes. Otherwise Fairy Tale Events can help. With the latter source, even though their main focus is on wedding cakes, they can also produce some great customised children's birthday cakes.

2. Animals

Children love their animals. Therefore it makes sense to prepare or order, (or get a beloved friend or family member to make for you) a birthday cake with their favourite animal. Even though the year of the Dragon is about to leave us, Taste Magazine purports some great kids birthday cake ideas, including a Friendly Dragon Cake and an Octopus cake. Clearly such cakes are fun, fresh and different to the plain old sponge cake with jam in the middle and icing on top.

3. Novelty Cakes

These cakes are great as they can be catered for both boys and girls. For the girls think fairies and cupcakes, and for the boys, trains, footballs and skeletons are great birthday cake ideas to get the creative juices flowing. For any child, the cake can also be decorated with their favourite school activity, for example, snakes and ladders or hopscotch. For a mud cake, let's think "stuck in the mud" - a favourite primary school past time. A real innovative cake would have to be the adorable jewellery box cake found at Taste online.

Other ideas? Why not try a few different cakes in smaller servings as pre-cake party treats in addition to the frankfurts, mini meat pieces and sausage rolls that come with most parties, in addition to chips and lollies. Decorated cupcakes are also a hit. Speaking of Australia Day coming up, and as "pink" is a hot colour for many reasons, pink lamingtons is another great idea for a child's birthday party.

Let's eat some cake? Absolutely.

The poor octopus looks like its legs have been chopped off. The jewellery box is very clever though.
