Birthday Bash @ the Melbourne Hotel

Published May 20th 2013
I'd never been to the Melbourne Hotel at West End until I attended a 30th birthday party recently. Everyone had to dress up as a 1990's Hip Hop or R&B artist a great idea to get in costume and reminisce about my younger days.

Finding the Melbourne Hotel was pretty easy and it was a bonus they had free parking at the back as well as secure paid parking available under the hotel (approximately $8 for the night). On arrival at the entrance, I followed a sign directing the way to the birthday party. The function room was upstairs, softly lit and decorated with 90's items such as old school tapes (remember them?) and CDs, hip hop posters, boom boxes, gold chains and bandanas.

The room is large enough for 150 people with dry bar tables and stools, lounges and a dance floor to comfortably mingle and dance. The DJ box is set up with electronic equipment including a laptop to play music, videos and display pictures on the TV screens and the huge projector. All you had to turn up with was your music, video and pictures on a USB or a portable hard drive.

The bar is massive and there was always room to order a drink after copious amount of dancing.

A bonus part of the function room is the huge outdoor balcony with chairs and tables which smokers frequented. Guests were sitting comfortably puffing away.

This impressive function room has it all and no one had to leave the party unless they were going home. The place felt like our very own exclusive night club.

The bar staff were out in force clearing tables of empty glasses and bottles frequently which was terrific service.

Throughout the night, finger food was served hot and included freshly crumbed prawns, party gourmet pies, pork buns, pizza slices, spring rolls and chicken satays. Very tasty food indeed.
As with all birthdays, we had to stop the music for formalities, the birthday song and the cake. The delicious chocolate mud cake was made by Grand Indulgence.

Prizes were awarded to the best dressed 90's Hip Hop or R&B female, male and group.

The night came to an end at around 2am. I'm pleased to say there were cabs all over the place and if I did have a few alcoholic drinks, it would have been easy to get home.

So if you're looking for a place to hold a function with lots of space, ample parking, very clean amenities, smoking area, great staff and good finger food, check out the Melbourne Hotel at Browning Street, West End. I was totally impressed.
