This reserve located in Belgrave certainly does live up to its name, it serves as a sanctuary to many of Melbourne's native birds, you can spot birds from Rosellas to Herons, the Herons seem to strike poses when you take pictures of them.

It's definitely a bird watcher's paradise, I myself found it very therapeutic watching the different species of birds make their way around the reserve.

I assumed that the reserve got its name from all the bird life, but it has a history to it. The Birds family owned the land from 1940 and used it for sheeping farming, 150 years ago the land was cleared for grazing and crop production, before this The Wurrundjeri people lived close to Birdsland.

The reserve is 75 hectares, it has 2 lakes and a BBQ area at the entrance that makes for an epic picnic spot.

There are great walking tracks throughout the reserve, if you are walking with your dog it must remain on a leash as per the reserve's rules.

The greatest moment during my walk was when I came across an Echidna, seeing it in the wild as opposed to seeing in the zoo is an immensely different experience, it prodded along slowly as I inched closer to get some great photos. A prized photo would be that of a Platypus, which a few people have spotted swimming in the lakes, so keep your eyes peeled!

HOW TO GET THERE: **The entrance to the reserve is located on Mt. Morton Road, when heading towards Belgrave it's on the left before Apsley Road.

NOTES: The Reserve opens at 7:30am every day. Closing times do vary depending on the season. Check the signs at the park entrance for details. The reserve is not open on days of Total Fire Ban.
