Have some fun and help older homeless women.

That’s the premise of long-standing charity group Foxglove Project’s new Birds Nest Australia project which will have its launch at the South of Perth Yacht Club.

Foxglove has been working for several years to empower women through self-help groups in Rwanda and also has programs in Cambodia and India.

Foxglove founder Kelley Chisholm

When Foxglove founder Kelley Chisholm discovered that in Australia women aged over 55 were the most likely to become homeless, she decided she needed to do something about it.

It prompted Foxglove’s first Australian project, working with St Bart’s, supporting transition housing, retraining and support of older women in crisis.

Fun-loving party band the Moonlighters will provide the entertainment for the launch event on Saturday, July 29 from 6pm onwards at South of Perth Yacht Club, 2 Canning Beach Road, Applecross, Western Australia.

The $100 tax-deductible donation for entry will go to St Bart's women’s transition home - there is no charge to attend the event.

As well as lots of positive conversation, the launch will include champagne on arrival, finger food, a silent auction, and fundraising raffles.

St Bart's is one of Perth's leading not-for-profit providers of accommodation and outreach services and along with Foxglove will help vulnerable West Australians who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, facing mental health challenges, trauma, and hardship.

Women over the age of 55 are the most likely to be homeless

More than 240,000 women over 55 are at risk of homelessness with many living in their cars, couch surfing with family and friends, or finding temporary shelters. Many sleep rough in unsafe circumstances.

The Birds Nest Australia project will raise funds in 2023 and 2024 to support the St Bart’s Women’s Service, a transitional home which supports 28 women at any one time who are at risk of homelessness.

St Bart’s provides each woman with a private room and either an ensuite or shared bathroom around a common cooking, recreation, garden and sitting area.

Each woman has a case manager to help them develop a personalised recovery plan to give them independence and a safe, long-term place to live.

Kelley says that while the subject is a serious one it is also important to celebrate Foxglove’s achievements so far which have made a positive difference to the lives of thousands of women in other parts of the world.

The Birds Nest Australia launch will spread the word and help ensure every woman over 55 is able to find help and compassion in a safe and supportive environment.

Helping with the celebration will be the Moonlighters Band which has been playing around Perth at pubs, private parties and corporate gigs since 2009.

The six-piece cover band is influenced by great bands such as Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR), Neil Diamond, ACDC, Amy Winehouse, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bryan Adams, Dragon, The Church, Angels and many Australian rock bands.

The Moonlighters promise to get the audience onto the dance floor with their high-energy songs and fun and engaging show.

The band of seasoned musicians are passionate about their craft and pride themselves on their ability to tailor their performance to suit any audience.
