Here’s something different and interesting for the whole family and a great way to spend a Sunday morning in the beautiful surrounds of the Woodlands Historic Park. Your guides for this birding tour and bush tucker walk and talk are Kat Fox and Jo Russell. Not only will you get to see some of our amazing bird life, but you’ll also learn about indigenous food, fibre and medicine with a bush tucker walk. Children can enjoy nature story time, ephemeral art, bush tucker treats and a free lunch.

Kate Fox, from Hume Libraries, will guide you on the bird tour. Jo Russell, a Wiradjuri woman and Hume resident, is your expert for the bush tucker walk.

The event runs during Bird Week (16th to 22nd of October) and is sponsored by the Hume City Council as they launch their new nature trail guides. The guides are available in printed or electronic form and aim to help you explore and connect with nature in your local area. Click here for details of Hume’s natural areas and to view or download copies of the Discover Nature Trail Guide for Broadmeadows and Surrounds, Craigieburn and Surrounds, and Sunbury and Surrounds. The guides describe the local natural areas and present a user-friendly map.

The Woodlands Historical Park aims to preserve a landscape very similar to what early European settlers would have encountered when they arrived. Visit the homestead to view a prefabricated timber house brought from Britain in the 1840s. Walk through the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Sanctuary. (Make sure you keep the gates closed.) There are several shared trails for walkers and cyclists. Amongst the birds that frequent the park are superb fairy wrens, crimson rosellas, red-rumped parrots, peregrine falcons, rainbow lorikeets, laughing kookaburras and wedge-tailed eagles. In fact, e-bird notes this as a birding hotspot with 178 species sighted. Click here for the full list. You might also spot wallabies, kangaroos or echidnas.

The Bird Week Walk and Talk at Woodlands Historic Park is a free event, but bookings are essential. Click here to reserve your spot.
