Located in the World Heritage listed Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland, O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat is a bird lover's paradise. Over two hundred and thirty species have been recorded, including Crimson Rosellas and King Parrots.

These vibrant birds have been visiting O'Reilly's since a family member nursed an injured Rosella back to health and released it. Crimson Rosellas and King Parrots continue to flock there, where bird feeding is now a licensed activity with a dedicated bird feeding area. These beautiful birds often swoop onto people's heads or hands in search of food.

The bird feeding area is open daily from 11am until 3pm. Tickets can be purchased from the gift shop and cost $4 for a feeding bowl with specially formulated food. Of course, you don't always need seeds to attract them, with a King Parrot taking quite a liking to my new straw hat.

O'Reilly's is the perfect place for a day trip, especially during the summer as it is five degrees cooler on top of the mountain. It's a scenic two hour drive from Brisbane via Canungra, a quaint country town. Click here for directions. Alternatively, take Duck Creek Road. Read my review on this four-wheel drive only track for more information.
