A leisurely Sunday Drive led my partner and I to discover a hidden gem known as Birches Restaurant. Located on the scenic Mount Mee tourist road, it seems to have amassed the winning combination of views, great service and delicious food.

Before I get to the good stuff let me start with a couple of faults. Number one it is quite hot, so I probably would hold off for either an evening dining session, or the cooler months if it is a lunch date you're after. Secondly, by no fault of the restaurant's, it is on a fairly busy main road so if you're not particularly fussed on the passing parade of motorcycles I recommend booking a table either inside or on the back deck. Finally, I don't know if it was a bad day for them in the kitchen, it didn't seem to be excessively busy, but the meals take a really long time, so if you're in a hurry also not a good option.

Nitpicking aside, the restaurant is beautiful and suits the hinterland setting down to a tee. The food is also quite good. For lunch I ordered the grilled barramundi in lemon butter glaze with seasonal vegetables.

The other half decided to opt for the BBQ Pork Mignonettes with plum sauce, also served with seasonal vegetables.

For a fine dining restaurant the portion sizes are gargantuan, so unless you have a monster appetite, or plenty of time to relax into your food coma, a main without entree or dessert will most likely leave you feeling sufficiently stuffed. The meals were well thought out and tasty but unfortunately both of us found our respective meats a little on the dry side. The vegetables, however, were beautifully cooked, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt this time around and hoping that our next meal there will really knock our socks off. Their beverage list is also fairly extensive and most will find something to please within its pages.

Birches also pride themselves in catering for a wide variety of functions, so if you are looking for somewhere beautiful to hold your next special event I'm sure they are worth investigating further. Regardless of the occasion, Birches is definitely worth a visit. The staff are delightful, the view is gorgeous and the food is worthy of commendation. Next time you are planning a weekend drive or a romantic dinner I would thoroughly recommend you considering this picturesque little restaurant. I think you might just be glad that you did!
