Birak is the Nyoongar season for the hot and dry months of December and January; during this time the Moodjar trees flowers bright orange and are known as the Nyoongar Christmas Trees. In local dreaming, it is said that when a Nyoongar person passes away their spirit enters the tree where they wait for Birak. When the tree flowers, their spirit goes west over Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) to be with their ancestors.
If you are unable to make it on the day, the event will be broadcast by Noongar Radio.
