Awarded both the Best Regional Restaurant, Best Regional Wine List and two chefs hats in 2014's Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food Guide, Biota dining is worth the pilgrimage down to Bowral for all lovers of fine food and wine.

Bowral is about 90 minutes South-West of Sydney by car, located in the Southern Highlands of NSW, a region known for its vast wineries and cellar doors. Indeed, a "wine crawl" of the Southern Highlands is recommended for all Oenophiliacs (lovers of wine), but ensure that you drive safely!



Biota's stay-and-dine package is an amazing (and romantic) mid-week/weekend country getaway that isn't too far from Sydney, it includes one or two nights accommodation in the Biota rooms, and a 5 course degustation dinner. Brunch is available on weekends for an extra cost (usually around $18-20).



Many of the restaurant's ingredients are sourced in the expansive restaurant gardens, one of the most unique aspects of Biota.



There is a bar next to the restaurant that serves a great variety of craft beers, local wines and cocktails inspired by ingredients from their gardens. A large fireplace keeps the bar area warm and cosy on a winter's night. There is also a bar menu available for those who wish to dine more casually over a drink or two.



We ordered the lavender martini ($17) and a pepperberry collins ($17) cocktail, as well as a lobo pear cider. The cocktails are full-flavoured and have unique and fresh ingredients sourced from the gardens.

We opted for the 5 course degustation menu, shown below. The service was attentive yet unobtrusive. The food was flavoursome and regionally inspired, definitely not something easily found in Sydney!



The rooms are cosy and comfortable, with decor that suits the close-to-nature ethos of the restaurant. It's a great place to kick back before and after dinner, and allows you to fully appreciate Biota's wine list without needing to worry about getting home!



Rates start at $150 pp, inclusive of a 5 course degustation dinner. Brunch is available on the weekends. Please check the website for more details.
