Biodiversity Month is held every year in September. This year
the South Australian Museum has a great program of activities to entertain curious visitors--young and old alike. From storytelling to entomophagy--that's eating insects--there's a special focus on some of the world's smallest critters.
On the 13th of September the Museum is hosting
Grub's Up: Food of the Future? It's a panel discussing the role insects might play in solving the food security problems of the future. As well as the panel, local chef Duncan Welgemoed from Bistro Dom will be serving up plates of creepy crawlies for you to eat and, possibly, enjoy.
For children 10 and up there is an
insect pinning workshop on September 15th. Kids will learn all about insect pinning and will even get to pin their own specimen and take it home.
3-5 year olds will enjoy
Tell Me a Story: Bugs and Butterflies . The stories incorporate song, dance, story telling, poetry and exploration to help tell a story using some of the interesting and amazing things you'll find inside the museum. It's a great way for younger kids to learn something new in a fun and engaging way. Younger children will also enjoy the outdoor screening of
A Bug's Life on the lawns outside the museum. It's followed by 1950s sci-fi horror flick,
Them! The movie is about giant bugs taking over the world, so it's probably better suited to older children and adults.
After dark you can take a torchlight tour through the biodiversity gallery. This gallery is one of the highlights of the museum even with all the lights on. There are tours designed for children
6-12 and
13-17 , and a special
over 18s torchlight tour . Unfortunately the 6-12 tour has already sold out, but there are still tickets available for the other two sessions.
Biodiversity Month ends with the School Holiday program:
Spineless . Kids can learn loads of interesting facts about spiders, build their own insect hotels, watch bees making their own honey, learn how to use microscopes, as well as loads of other fun activities.
One of the best bits about Biodiversity Month is that almost all of the events are free. You'll still need to book to secure a space, but it can easily be done
online .
