Enjoy a cave with views
With the stresses of the upcoming holiday season, now is the perfect time to hike through Lamington National Park. The Binna Burra Caves Track allows visitors to enjoy a leisurely hike through the cool rainforests, admire the stunning views and explore the iconic Kweebani Cave.

The Caves Track is a 3.5kms return walk through the forest between the Binna Burra Information Centre and the Binna Burra Lodge. This track has previously been completed as a 5.2kms circuit, incorporating the bitumen road to return to the starting point. As this can be dangerous, it is advisable to return to the start via the same path.

Although the Caves Track is not particularly difficult, it is rated as a level four due to exposed cliff edges and the likelihood of falling rocks.

I recently hiked part of this track with my children aged from 3 to 9 years. We started our adventure from the entrance next to the Binna Burra Information Centre, as it is only 1.1kms from the Kweebani Cave.

The trail begins as a narrow dirt track winding through an open eucalypt forest. As previously mentioned, there are some sections where the track is quite close to the exposed edges of the cliff/mountain. Hikers are to be particularly mindful and ensure close supervision of children. Additional signage alerts hikers to keep an eye out for a particular stinging tree.

The Caves Track offers stunning views of the Coomera Valley, the Darlington Range and rhyolite cliff line. Take advantage of a commemorative seat along the way – an ideal spot for resting and taking in the sights.

Stunning views

As we neared the cave, the landscape became rockier. We navigated concrete steps and passed by several rocky overhangs. The children were especially delighted to discover that the track passed through a tunnel carved into the rock. On the other side, it was only a very brief walk before spotting the Kweebani Cave nestled within the rocky cliff face.

This landmark once provided shelter to the original inhabitants of this area, the Yugambeh kinship group. After a lengthy discussion regarding the local history, we started our journey back to the beginning.

Hikers continuing along the Caves Track will ascend the slope of Mount Roberts with a series of steps. Trail map can be found here.
