, formally Deganis in Eltham, is well known for its large exterior dining deck. Perfect for summer dining and heated for you in winter. This is now aptly named Billy Deck. Its interior styling features a tractor hanging from the roof and the shovel and pitchfork on the wall. The tools are a trademark in all the Billy cafes. And… to my delight, so is the fact that all food is made on the premises and they pride themselves on a large variety of vegan and vegetarian food.

The first time I went to for breakfast and I was surprised how fast and friendly the service was. I don't think you would find a bigger breakfast than 'The big one' at . Billy's big one ($23) includes free range eggs, sausages, spicy house beans, corn fritters, bacon… and yes there's more. Thyme roasted mushrooms and cherry Truss tomatoes on sourdough.

I was a bit taken aback when I saw the size of it and jokingly commented to the waiter that that was nowhere near big enough. The waiter paused until he realised I was not serious. I wonder if they would have tried to add more to the plate if I was being serious.



Predictably, I ordered the avo smash. At , they added pesto, as well as tomato, homemade bread and eggs. This brekky could not be faulted in one single way. I really liked the homemade pesto touch, which I had not experienced previously.

Other menu items include soup of the day $16. All Kid's breakfasts are $10. Next time I go I'm planning to have the Three cheese gnocchi ($18) or Risotto with caramelized onion, baby spinach, peas, pepita and crumbled Yagoona feta $20. I'm already feeling conflicted so I might have to I'll need to toss a coin.



There are 16 Billy's restaurants in Victoria and more interstate. The founding vision is based on the story of William Bourke, the son of an English immigrant, who loved working on the land. The quality of the food at Billy's restaurants follows his love of fresh seasonal products (farm and sea). The restaurants pride themselves on having fresh and healthy produce direct from the paddock (or sea) to your plate.



While the food is noteworthy the service is impeccable. We were served promptly, courteously and attentively. My parade of questions about the name of the cafe and its origin was met with enthusiasm. The waiter replied patiently as if he had nothing better to do all day.
