Anytime I hear of a new suburban café opening I get excited because it means there's another potentially great weekend mealtime option just minutes away. When I heard about the opening of Billy Kart Kitchen in Annerley I was even more excited, because it is the new venture of inspiring Australian celebrity chef Ben O'Donoghue, from Surfing the Menu fame.
The breakfast menu sounds fairly straightforward at first until you read down the list to the apple, date and quinoa bircher muesli with coconut, hazelnut and pecan and the Aussie Asian eggs with king prawns, bacon and chilli (if you don't mind a bit of light and crispy deep-fried goodness, you won't be disappointed).
Despite the café being fairly full, the service was efficient and food was on the table in no time. I was delighted to find a unique take on the typical breakfast menu items. Our Campos coffee was perfect in taste, temperature and strength. My two year old also gave her babycino a big thumbs up. And while we held back on the sweets this time, the pastries looked amazing.
There's a lightness both in colour and in spirit to the café, though when it came to the food it was all heads down in the kitchen as Ben personally took care with every plate before it was delivered to the table.
With a focus on fresh, local produce and flavours, the lunch menu includes pulled Berkshire pork shoulder with sugarloaf slaw, Baja sauce and chips, seared scallops, eggplant, mint and salsa di agridolce and gin, roasted fillet of pink snapper, asparagus, cherry vine tomatoes and olives and barbequed buttermilk brined chicken, aioli and heirloom tomato panzanella. Billy Kart Kitchen is open Tuesday - Sunday for breakfast and lunch and on Friday nights for dinner and drinks.
