A coastal pub serving great food and drinks with a smile
Coral Bay might be a heck of a long way from Perth, but if you are planning a trip to the area or a day trip from Exmouth, lunch or dinner at Bill's Tavern is a must.
Located just next to the Coral Bay backpackers, Bill's houses a bottle shop, sports bar, function room and a restaurant. While on a recent family holiday to Coral Bay, my husband and I ate here twice and every meal was well received.
Bill's is home to a huge selection of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails, plus plenty of different meals to choose from. The restaurant décor is simple, although they do have a stunning vertical garden on display plus a fireplace, which came in handy when the temperature dropped a few degrees.
The menu is a mix of modern Australian favourites, including fresh fish and seafood, main meals, salads and burgers, plus tapas and share plates and pasta dishes. Bill's offers a daily special, and there is also a kid's menu consisting of pasta and crumbed fish or chicken with chips.
On our first night at Bill's my husband ordered the Exmouth Prawn Bucket from the tapas menu – I am no fan of prawns, but these were the coolest looking prawns I'd ever seen. Presented in a little bucket along with sauces and bread, I almost felt like tucking into one. Almost. My husband enjoyed them and said they were succulent and fresh like good prawns should be.
I ordered the chilli tapas – there is a main meal version and a smaller, tapas version, which was still a generous size and perfect for a picky eater like myself. And I mean, literally picky – I like to pick at food, so having all the main components of this meal separated was simply perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed the chilli – it had a lovely flavour, which tasted delicious with the cheese, sour cream and corn chips. The meals didn't take too long to arrive, despite the restaurant being busy.
The next time we visited, we received the same friendly service and speedy meal delivery. My husband ordered the 300g Black Angus Scotch Fillet – cooked rare, with peppercorn sauce. He polished it off in record time, which speaks for itself. We ordered the Potato Skins for our daughter, which are basically giant chips, and she seemed to enjoy them. They were cooked to perfection and were served with a chilli sauce and sour cream.
The Ningaloo Fish Curry was my favourite meal at Bill's. Cooked with local King Snapper in a mild curry sauce, it was beautifully presented, had a lovely colour and the fish was super tender and the rice fluffy. Usually the thought of fish curry doesn't appeal to me, but this one may have just changed my opinion in regards to future fish curries.
