Having seen Bill Henson's Landscape exhibition at the
Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum (CAGHM), I was keen to see this exhibition at the NGV as part of the
Festival of Photography , showcasing a collection of images that had been created between 2008 to 2011.
As part of the NGV Festival of Photography,
Bill Henson is amongst many other great inspirational photographers, such as
William Eggleston ,
Zoe Croggon ,
Patrick Pound and other great contemporary photographers.
Bill Henson is one of Australia's foremost contemporary artists. Born in Melbourne, his work has been exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally since the mid-1970's.
His unique painterly style and the use of an almost pitch-black darkness is common throughout his works. His photographs use of bokeh (In photography, bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light) gives his images a painterly atmosphere. The work is often presented as diptychs, triptychs and in other groupings, and the exhibitions are specifically curated by Henson to reflect a sense of musicality.
Duality is a recurring theme of Henson's work, often in combination with adolescent subjects, with their faces often blurred or partly shadowed.
Bill Henson has had his fair share of controversy over the years with his photographs of naked teenagers, however in most incidences, the work has either been removed and placed to view somewhere "mild and justified" and given a PG rating by the Australian Classification Board, suggesting viewing by children under the age of 16 is suitable with parental guidance.
The work has an artistic context and in no way displays any sexual connotations. Bill Henson has been a favourite photographer of mine since the early 90's and his style resonates with a cinematic intensity, with dramatic and painterly dream-like glimpses into the human world.
