Bikram yoga is a form of yoga derived from traditional Hatha yoga. It was founded by the Yoga College of India founder, Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury. Yogiraj Bikram invented 26 posture sequences that are performed twice in a 90-minute period and established Bikram yoga. A weight-lifting accident had caused an injury to the Yogiraj's knee and it is said that he would not have walked again if not for practising the 26 posture sequences.

Bikram yoga is the most popular form of hot yoga. It is practised for 90 minutes in a room heated to 40 degrees Celsius with a humidity of 40 percent. The heat, together with the 26 posture series is what makes Bikram yoga unique. Bikram yoga instructors must be certified through the Bikram training program prior to teaching or holding classes.
The heat in the yoga room warms the muscles, ligaments and tendons; it deep-massages tissues, glands and organs -- stretching is thus easier and less painful. The heat improves circulation and helps heal and prevent injuries. Sweating flushes toxins and other chemical imbalances from the body.

Be aware that there are health risks related to the extreme heat. Excessive sweating can cause dehydration and there is a risk of hyperthermia or body overheating. Dizziness, nausea, light-headedness, heart palpitation, and fainting are some of the symptoms of heat stroke. People with heart and blood pressure concerns should consult with their doctors before attempting any form of hot yoga.
Many health benefits are ascribed to Bikram yoga. It builds strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance; it promotes well-being and a peaceful mind; it induces better sleep; it improves posture; it tones and helps with weight-maintenance; it reduces stress; it improves lung capacity for oxygen; it helps eliminate back pain; and it promotes spinal strength.
