Did you know that there are showers under the City Square?
As I see it, one of the greatest draw backs to riding into the city is that it leaves you feeling sweaty and grimy, not just from the physical exertion but from the dust of the road and the feeling that your hair is stuck to your head - not very glamorous at all.
If you want to do something other than just riding, it presents a bit of a challenge. After all there is nothing worse than turning up to brunch, lunch or even dinner all hot and sweaty. Well I have just discovered the solution, the Bike Pod.
The Bike Pod is safe, secure and clean and is provided by the Melbourne City Council for those who care to ride into the city. It's not for storing your bike in, it is for personal hygiene and comfort. The Pod provides showering and changing facilities. It is situated under the Melbourne City Square in the carpark and is opposite the security guard's room - so you couldn't feel any safer. It is also free of charge.
To find the Bike Pod you have to enter the City Square Car Park (lower ground floor) via Flinders Lane, or if you just want to check it out before you use it there are stairs and a lift from the ground level at the Collins Street end of the Square that you use to go into the underground carpark.
There were quite a few bikes when I was there at mid-day on a Saturday but still plenty of room for more.
