Epic Canadian ski holiday with an Aussie flair
Skiers at Mt. Hotham in Victoria, Australia, may know that the native Australian family re-known for developing this stellar Australian ski resort from 1968 to 1995, are also known for their development of Big White Ski Resort in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.
The Schuman family purchased Big White in 1985, and since then have poured millions into creating a world class family ski destination resort that boasts pristine champagne powder with an average annual snowfall of 750 cm. (24.5 feet). Big White, located just under an hour from Kelowna, B.C., offers a vertical drop of 777 m. (2,550 feet). 118 designated trails with a total of 105 km. (65 miles) of marked runs, are composed of 18% Beginner, 54% Intermediate, 22% Expert, and 6% Extreme.
Big White is British Columbia's second largest ski resort with ski-in ski-out accommodation for 17,000 guests.
What makes Big White unique, is the Australian friendship made strong by the Schuman family. It is estimated about 30-40% of Big White staffers each year are off-season Australian ski resort workers. Being called 'Mate' is expected. Australia Day is always celebrated with face paint and costumes and singing, and the unmistakeable enthusiasm of Aussies rubbing off on Canadians and other ski vacationers from around the globe. Whether eating in a restaurant or pub, staying in mountainside accommodation, or on the lift, Aussies just can't be missed, and are a constant reminder that there's something special about having long time friends from down under.
The Schumans also own Vernon, B.C., sister ski resort Silver Star, purchased in 2001 and just up the road from Big White.
Big White operates late November to mid April. You can fly Australia to Kelowna on Qantas, via Los Angeles.
