Gourmet food and coffee hiding away in the BIg Tree House
Big Tree House Cafe is a little gem tucked away in suburban Rydalmere, near Parramatta. You could easily miss it, driving down Calder Road, but keep an eye out for the bright teal awning and make sure you pay chef Justin Park and his team a visit.

You can sit inside, out the front on the sunny footpath, or out the back under the big tree that gives the café its name. The café interior is light and bright, with vintage light fittings, pale wood accents and quirky decorative touches here and there that make it feel like you're hanging out at a friend's place.

Breakfast is served all day. The last time I visited, I couldn't decide whether I wanted sweet or savoury, so I ordered the ricotta pancakes with honey cinnamon butter (with berries instead of banana), and a side order of chips. The pancakes were light and fluffy, yet filling. The chips were fat and crunchy, just as they should be.

A range of gourmet sandwiches, salads and burgers are served from 11:30, and there are also regular chef's specials – I highly recommend the trio of yummy sliders (pork, beef and chicken), perfect if you're feeling a little indecisive, or would just like to sample a range of tasty flavours.

For those with a sweet tooth, there's a small range of cakes, tarts and friands available. The Campos coffee is always delicious, as are the old fashioned milkshakes served in milk bottles.

The café is usually humming with activity, but it's rare that you'll have to wait for a table or service. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff ensure a pleasant experience, whether you're catching up with friends, enjoying a coffee on your own, or even doing a bit of work while being well fed.
