July is just around the corner and the ideal time to journey west for an unforgettable trip to the Simpson Desert. Located to the west of Birdsville, the Simpson Desert is home to spectacular starry skies, vast red sand dunes, incredible natural springs and the .

Touted as the most remote music festival in the world, the is more than just music. Now in its fifth year, this family-friendly event includes desert drag races, fashions in the desert and indigenous craft workshops in addition to its musical entertainment.

Held from 4 – 6 July, this year's stellar line-up includes Lee Kernaghan, Missy Higgins, Mark Seymour, Janes Reyne, Ian Moss, Kate Ceberano, Russell Morris and Troy Cassar-Daley.

Straddling the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland, the Simpson Desert is the fourth largest desert in Australia and famed for its long parallel sand dunes. The largest dune, Nappanerica, otherwise known as Big Red, transforms into 'Bashville' every July when thousands descend upon this 40-metre high mound for three days of fun and frivolity.

Camping is the main form of accommodation unless you book a travel package. There is plenty of space available which is suitable for caravans, campervans and tents. Alternatively, the Birdsville Caravan Park is another accommodation option.

Located 35km from the Bash, the small outback town of Birdsville with a population of approximately 100, is situated on the banks of the Diamentina River and offers plenty of facilities for tourists including guided tours, service stations, general stores, an art gallery, emergency services, tourist information, library and internet facilities. Be sure to pop into the Birdsville Bakery to try one of their famous camel pies.

If you fancy getting active, then sign up for the Bashville Drags, a short foot race through the campsite raising money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This year's theme is "Pricilla – Queen of the Desert".

This is one festival where the journey getting there is part of the fun. Allow two days of travel from Brisbane. While a 2WD will get you to Birdsville, a 4WD is your key to adventure.

Alternatively, the Rock'n'Roll Road Trip takes the hassle out of driving. Sit back and soak up the outback scenery in a luxury coach. Operated by Kangaroo Buslines, tickets include transport to and from the event, camping and tickets.

Standard and premium tickets are available. While both tickets include entertainment and three nights of camping, the premium ticket also includes a guaranteed refund due to event cancellation as a result of weather, an event program, membership to the Outback Mates Club, a six-month digital subscription to 4X4 Adventures magazine, plus ticket holders will also go in the draw to win one of six backstage experiences.
