There is more than just grocery shopping to do at the Adelaide Central Market this school holiday. There is Big Market Adventures for Little Foodies, which is an exciting program of interactive and creative activities to keep children entertained. The activities are great value for money as they are free, or reasonably priced, and make for an enjoyable day out for you and your little foodie.
Take your child to the market and bring home a tiger, butterfly, bear or maybe even a princess. Face painting is available every Saturday from 9.30 am until 12 noon. It's free and makes a trip to the market fun for the little one.
Baby Animal Nursery There aren't many things more delightful than baby animals and on Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11 there is a free baby animal nursery at the Adelaide Central Market from 9 am until 12 noon. Children can pat, hold, cuddle and get to know the gorgeous baby animals, like chicks, bunnies and lambs.
Spud Stamping Workshop Visit the market on Thursday, October 3 and Friday, October 4 from 9 am until 12 noon and attend a spud stamping workshop. Children can get creative and make a masterpiece from potato, but best of all, the workshop is free and bookings aren't necessary.
Market Trail For $5 per child (plus booking fee), little foodies can follow the brand new market trail and learn all about the local and imported produce at the market. There are eight stops on the trail and each participant will receive a market bag, map and a free item at selected stalls.
The trail will be held on Tuesday, October 1; Thursday, October 3; Friday, October 4; Tuesday, October 8; Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11. Bookings are required for this one, so please head to the Adelaide Central Market website for more information.
Little Market Chefs Little Market Chefs is run by Sprout Cooking and will teach children how to prepare simple, healthy and delicious meals. The 45 minute class costs $18 (plus booking fee) and participants will receive nutritional advice, a market chef hat and recipes to try at home.
Classes for children aged 5 to 8 years will be held on Tuesday, October 1 and Tuesday, October 8 at 10 am, 12 noon and 2 pm on the Gouger Street stage.
Classes for children aged 9 to 13 years will also include a market tour and are held on Thursday, October 3 and Thursday, October 10 at 10 am, 12 noon and 2 pm on the Gouger Street stage.

The market is open on Tuesdays from 7 am until 5.30 pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am until 5.30 pm, Fridays from 7 am until 9 pm and Saturdays from 7 am until 3 pm (closed Sundays and Mondays).
