Making a rather large splash in Adelaide
The Broadway musical Big Fish made quite a splash as it burst its way on to the Adelaide musical theatre scene last night. While most people are aware of Big Fish the movie directed by quirky Tim Burton, it is not commonly known that it has been transformed into a spectacular Broadway musical. The preview of The Therry Dramatic Society Inc.'s latest production took place on Wednesday June 8, before its official opening night on Thursday June 9.
With a strong cast featuring some of Adelaide's best performers, this unique and magical story unfolded to a packed theatre — and was told with passion and excitement. A practical, yet stunning, backdrop set the scene for the story which focuses on Edward Bloom's life and relationship with his grown-up son. Through flashbacks to this father-son relationship, Edward Bloom's story is told through a series of enchanting tales, leaving both his son and the audience questioning reality.
It is easy to fall in love with the characters instantly as you are transported to another time and place, and immersed in their world. The story is full of ups and downs; sadness and laughter; magic and harsh reality. I know I can't have been the only one to go from laughing loudly to silently shedding a tear in seconds.
Each of the endearing characters captured the delighted audience's attention with their strong voices and stage presence which was consistent throughout the entire show. The two protagonists, Edward and Sandra, particularly stood out as they never failed to perform with charm and robust, polished voices. The music, lighting and exciting choreography also added the magic of the show, keeping the audience entranced by all that was happening on stage.
Overall, this production of the musical Big Fish was outstanding. In total there are ten performances between the 8th and the 18th of June, at the Arts Theatre in Angas Street. If you are looking for an inspiring and memorable night out, I would definitely recommend journeying with these captivating characters through this humorous, emotional and beautiful story. With performances selling out fast, make sure you get your tickets and support Adelaide's local talents in this remarkable tale of life, storytelling, family and love.
