It's winter and, in
Victor Harbor that means it's whale watching season!
The Southern Right whales come up from Antarctica to mate and give birth in the warmer waters of the Southern Ocean. You can stand along the foreshore and watch them or you can get into a boat and be truly amazed up close.
The
Big Duck Boat Tours are a local company that operate an ocean adventure boat tour all day on the weekends, public holidays and school holidays. The giant ex-navy rubber ducky seats 10 comfortably and safely.
There are 2 tours to choose – a half hour and one hour. There are private charters also available by request.
The one hour tour takes you on a brilliant sightseeing adventure around Granite Island, down to Boomer Beach, through Shark Alley, past the Bluff and Seal Rock.
Seal Rock has a large number of New Zealand Fur Seals and Australian Sea Lions living there. The Australian Sea Lion is under
threat of extinction and it's a very special treat to see them in family groups in their natural environment.
The Big Duck boat is a licenced whale watching vessel. The best time of year to see the whales is between
May and October. If you don't see whales there is other wildlife around – dolphins, seals, birds and penguins.
Tours start from the causeway between Victor Harbor and Granite Island. Weather proof jackets and life jackets are provided.
