Looking for Sydney's best burger? There's another contender on the list. Introducing , conveniently located in the heart of Newtown's King Street.

Big Daddy's is about as close to an American diner as you can get, resplendent with red and white vinyl booths and a burger selection that will have you drooling. There's also subs, hotdogs and wings, along with an assortment of deep-fried favourites (jalapeno poppers, anyone?)
For first timers, please be aware that you need to place your order before you take a seat. There is likely to be a stack of menu flyers on the counter so you can ponder your choice, or step up and order the first thing you like off the board. The staff are very helpful and give you tips on what you can add to your selection (or quietly point out the burger you've ordered already has cheese but that it's okay if you really want to double up).

We sampled the Jr Daddy (single patty, single slice of cheese) with lettuce and tomatoes, and the Big Daddy (double patty, double cheese) with pickles and Canadian maple bacon. According to the sign, all burgers are cooked medium unless otherwise requested, but ours were probably a little closer to well-done (not really pink in the middle as promised). The special sauce (a kind of thousand-island dressing) and meat mix paired well, and brought a sweetness to each mouthful. The bun-to-patty ratio was favourable, but unfortunately the buns were just a bit over-toasted, which made it a little tricky to get our mouths around the whole contraption. We paired up our burgers with curly fries – delicious and crunchy with just the right amount of seasoning.[BREAK]
The table next to us ordered the New York Style 'dawg' (hotdog) and chicken and bacon waffles, both of which looked really good, and the milkshakes are just like they used to make in the old days.

Sadly, Big Daddy's is not licensed, but they do have a fantastic assortment of imported American sodas and ice tea. All meals are made to order, so you might have to wait a little for your meal. But the Big Daddy's team have you covered with their assortment of amusing metal signs guaranteed to distract you from your rumbling tummy.

This is not McDonald's (we paid $35 for two burgers, fries and soft drinks) but it's a great option if you're on your way to a movie or kicking off a night out. Not quite as good as Mary's but definitely more of a selection.
