First established in 1999, Beyond India at O'Connell Street, North Adelaide is notable for serving Indian cuisine that has won several awards. Service here is excellent - they provide you with table water and serve complimentary pappadums to start the meal as soon as you are seated. Pappadums are an Indian accompaniment made from black gram flour that resembles a cracker.

Their Chicken Biryani has a unique presentation in that it is covered with a layer of dough, which keeps the rice and chicken moist while being cooked. Sealing of the dish with the dough is called the dum/dhum process and the dish is also known as Dhum Biryani. The chicken in the biryani was succulent and moist and the spices enhanced its flavour without overpowering it. The dish came with a serving of cucumber raita whose refreshing and slightly sour taste contrasted wonderfully with the biryani. The dough topping is also edible, resembling the naan bread that is a core part of Indian cuisine.

The beef in the Beef Patiala we ordered was tender and the curry gravy had the right degree of spiciness, not too mild but also not so spicy that it overpowers your tastebuds. The gravy had a thick texture from the eggplant used in the dish.

My mother has usually found Indian vegetarian curries to be a bit disappointing, as the vegetables are often soft and mushy, which she does not enjoy. This was not the case with the Mushroom Baigan Masala we had, the mushrooms and eggplant were cooked just right with the right amount of bite to them. The flavour of the vegetables was brought out by the gravy, with a distinct flavour from the cumin.

Beyond India offers a good range of Naan Bread topped with diverse range of toppings or filled with various ingredients. Their Garlic Naan was crisp, topped with tandoori roasted garlic and a perfect companion for the spicy curries.

The restaurant offers free sugared fennel seeds to cleanse your tastebuds after eating the curries. Ambience of the restaurant was good and they offer a free delivery service for anywhere within a 5km distance of the restaurant.

Beyond India is a favourite of ours - and I love the chicken biriyani! Last time I was there I had the chicken tikka dosai and that was very nice too.
