I love the spelling of 'carnivale' for the free family event "" which will take place at the Perth Cultural Centre near the Perth Train Station from 10.00am until 2.00pm on Sunday 15 April. The word "carnivale" conjures up all the magic, colour and fun of the clowns, stilt-walkers, face-painters and story-tellers who will be on hand to inspire parents and young readers in the Year of Reading 2012.

I also love the logo of Better Beginnings which is 'Reading Helps Kids Fly'. Reading certainly enables children to make sense of the world and it empowers them to change and grow. Reading can be healing, reassuring, inspiring, practical and enjoyable. "To fly" - to take off, to go fast, to accelerate learning, to overcome limits and reach one's potential, to aim for the stars.

The love of reading would have to be one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. As well as making sense of their world it enables them to break free from a less than perfect place or if they are in a well-heeled place already it may give them the compassion to care for others not so fortunate.

On the other hand if children do not have a love of reading or the fundamental background to be able to learn to read at school when other children do then it can be a disadvantage and may hamper success in other areas of learning, and as an English teacher I have seen this first hand. Non readers could be termed disadvantaged and this is one of the reasons that shows like Sesame Street and Playschool began.

The driving force behind the fun presentation is to make sure that children from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds start school with the same fundamental language confidence, word recognition and love of words to enable them to have a fair go at learning to read.

Love of reading can be imparted with very little outlay. To keep costs low, parents, grandparents and carers of children can take advantage of the Better Beginnings program, the State Library in Perth, the libraries in the suburbs, second hand book stalls, book exchange stores or even swap with friends.

You can even sew a book for your toddler out of material featuring animals or fairies and zig-zag the edges using pinking shears. Make a book seem like a treat by gifting a book with the Easter eggs. If you have a child who is a reluctant reader try to find a way in to reading through their particular interests.

Better Beginnings has a special Reading Pack filled with tips on how to read to your small child and puzzles and games for the pre-schooler so it would be good to check this out.

Take it easy on your child though; every child learns at a different rate so don't be alarmed if your child seems to be taking a while to read even though you have provided the right "reading nurture". Your child WILL learn to read, but might be taking a bit longer to learn to read because he or she is developing faster in another developmental area. Take care not to compare your child with others as it could damage their self-esteem which in turn could set them back with reading when there wasn't a problem initially.

Rarely there may be some real problems like dyslexia and autism but these can be diagnosed and managed. A good thing to remember, too, is that the best part of reading to your babies, toddlers and early childhood age children is the cuddle they get with you on the couch - that is priceless.

Better Beginnings was created by the State Library of Western Australia as a literacy initiative funded by the State Government with the Royalties for Regions program which redistributes funds from mining royalties back to regional areas in WA; Local Governments; and Rio Tinto with its WA Mining Fund that makes funds available for the enhancement of Literacy through the Better Beginnings program and for apprenticeships, aimed at the long term enhancement of an educated workforce in Western Australia.
