Let's face it, we all love good food and evidence of our wanton indulgences inadvertently show up on our hips/arms/tummy/thighs. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford a gym membership. Here are some ways to keep fit while on a budget.
1. Skipping Yes, all those scenes from Rocky are true. Skipping is a great cardiovascular exercise, and builds your agility, balance and coordination at the same time. Add a 15-minute session of skipping to your regular cardiovascular routine to keep things interesting, or skip when you are unable to head out on your regular routine. All you need is a skipping rope of a suitable length from your dollar store.
2. Homemade weights
Forget about buying expensive weights. Just fill a 2-litre soft drink bottle/milk bottle with water and you've got yourself a 2kg weight. Use as you would normal weights. Use smaller bottles for lighter weights.
3. Go for a walk/run I abhor using treadmills for one simple reason: They are boring. A brisk walk/run around your neighbourhood park is free and treats you to fresh air, and lovely sights and sounds. You can also kill two birds with one stone and run your errands while on your walk or run.
4. Yoga at home You don't need a yogi to be able to do simple yoga. There are plenty of apps which provide yoga instruction that you can download into your smartphone. Grab a dollar-store yoga mat or a beach towel, start up the app and you're ready to go. However, be sure to do some quick research on proper yoga techniques and remember to go at your own pace.
5. Use an exercise ball These are easily available at your local department store, and simple exercises can be found on the internet. Use with weights to build core strength, balance and tone muscles.
