The future is here and it is plant-based! With vegetarian and vegan eateries popping up city like mushrooms after rain, we've put together a list of the best and cheapest.
Vegetarian before it was cool, Govindas is an MVP in the Brisbane plant-based food scene. Comfort food with an Indian influence, Govindas menu runs the gauntlet from curries and koftas to lasagna and potato bake. Their signature feast meals offer great value for money every day of the week; grab a small (curry and rice) for $10, a medium (curry, rice, koftas and chutney) for $12 and large (curry, rice, koftas, chutney, salad and dessert) for $16.

On the other end of the spectrum are newcomers Moo Free Burgers, where 'the only thing [they're] killing is your appetite'. With bricks and mortar stores in North Lakes and Morningside and a food truck at Clayfield, their massive menu includes breakfast options, burgers for adults and kids, salads bowls, milkshakes and ice creams. The best part? Every single day is a special day at Moo Free - get a $10 burger on Monday, a $15 burger and milkshake combo on Tuesday, half-price pancakes on Wednesday, $9 squeeze bowls on Thursday and $5 falafel on Friday.
At VegeRama, they're vege by name and vege by nature. There's a lot to choose from, with plant-based burgers that feature a vegan beef with caramelised onion and a Moroccan spiced lentil burger, as well as a rotating menu serving up hot dishes like mushroom stroganoff and Thai vegetable curries. Their daily deal starts at $7.50 for one hot dish with rice and goes up to $11.50 for three dishes with rice. Dinner for days!
Despite being housed in South Brisbane's Fish Lane, you won't find any meat at Grassfed. They keep it simple, with only six burgers (hamburger, BBQ beef burger, BLT, chicken, Aussie and Hawaiian) and five sides (curly fries, potato gems, loaded fries, Buffalo cauliflower and onion rings), all plant-based of course. They mix it up with limited-time specials, giving herbivores a chance to broaden their horizons on the cheap. At the time of printing, the specials included a bacon, truffle and Brie burger and a Biscoff milkshake.

The only international establishment on this list, Greenhouse Canteen has locations in South Brisbane, Gold Coast and Coolangatta, as well as an American counterpart in Ohio. It's appropriate, at their menu that wouldn't look out of place in an American diner; think (mushroom) cheeseburgers, Mac and (cashew nut) cheese, and (jackfruit) enchiladas. Try a bit of everything with the $45 degustation, which includes arancini balls, a selection of tacos, eggplant parmigiana and chickpea cannelloni.
If you've ever found yourself craving KFC's secret blend of herbs and spices, allow me to introduce Yavannas, Paddington vegan takeaway that will have you saying, are you sure there's no meat in this? Get Dinner for Two for $49 and choose from cheeseburgers, chicken schnitzels burgers or fried chicken served with chips and gravy. If that's not enough, a 12 pack of fried chicken with mashed potatoes, coleslaw and fries is $79.
