Now the colder weather is here, if you're like me, you may occasionally crave comfort food in the form of a pie. You imagine flakey pastry that melts in your mouth, with a delicious filling where you can actually identify the ingredients you're eating. Hmm yum, but where can you purchase such a pie? And to make the search even more challenging, where can you buy a delicious, wholesome vegetarian pie?

The good news is, I've discovered two excellent bakeries in the Murwillumbah area that make their own gourmet pies. Both have a range of vegetarian options as well as pies that would delight any meat eater.

The first, The Show & Shine Deli Café is conveniently located at 46 Kyogle Road, Bray Park just over 3 kms. from the centre of Murwillumbah.

They sell a range of good quality items in their delicatessen section and have a variety of sourdough breads baked fresh daily. My favourite is a Spelt and Rye Sourdough; they also make wholemeal, white and dark rye as well as a range of gluten free breads. I have bought their gluten free banana bread and gluten free bread rolls when I've had family visiting and both were pronounced excellent.

Now to the pies. The vegetarian options are Spinach and Mushroom, Parmesan and Green Peppercorns, Spinach and Feta and Asparagus, and Cheese and Corn and I can personally recommend all of them. For the meat eaters in your family they also have a range of interesting pies, for example, Salmon, Asparagus, Cheese and Corn and Moroccan Chicken.

The Show & Shine Deli Café is a family owned and run business. Trisha is a successful chef and has won awards at the Melbourne Festival and The Great Aussie Pie Competition in 2014.
The opening hours for the Show & Shine Deli Café are: Monday-Friday 6am-6pm. Saturday 7am-6pm. Sunday 8am-2pm. They don't have a website but the phone is (02) 66725270 and you can also find them on Facebook.

If you can't wait until you get home to eat your pie you can sit at a table in the Show & Shine Deli Café, order a coffee and eat in air-conditioned comfort.

However if you prefer a more casual setting there is a lovely park within a few minutes drive where you can eat at a picnic table and let the ants have the crumbs. It's the corner of Old Lismore Rd and Riveroak Dr. (There are toilets and a small playground area there too.)
The Show & Shine Deli Café has a stall at The Murwillumbah Farmers' Market in the Murwillumbah Showground every Wednesday 7am-11am.

The second bakery, in the nearby village of Uki is 'Uki Pies'; (formerly Uki Bakery until the present owner bought it 7 years ago) and it's a ten minute drive further along Kyogle Road. It is very popular with locals and tourists alike and TripAdvisor has given it a five star rating. The old style country bakery is in the heart of the small village.

Uki Pies make a variety of vegetarian and vegan gourmet pies. The vegan pies are: Curried Lentil, Pie Veg and Satay Veg. Vegetarian options are Cauliflower Cheese, Vegetarian Mexican and Veggie Mornay. Pies are baked all day and sold from the pie warmer; they are never reheated and all are delicious. They even have something different for the meat eaters such as beef and Guinness, satay chicken and rosemary and garlic butter.

The owner of Uki Pies, Louise Adele and her 3 staff weigh each pie to ensure the correct amount of filling and insist on using only the best ingredients. A range of cakes are also cooked at the bakery and for coffee lovers you can add a mug of Segafredo, a strong Italian coffee. Adele describes Uki Pies as home-cooking but on commercial premises.

There is no indoor seating available at Uki Pies but there are picnic settings outside where you and your friends or family can eat in a relaxed country setting.

Opening hours are: Monday-Thursday 6.30am-4pm. Friday 6.30am-2pm. and Saturday 8am-3pm. A website is pending but the phone number is (02) 6679 5838

Uki is a popular destination for day-trippers from Murwillumbah and the Gold Coast and many combine it with a visit to the Uki Craft and Produce Market and include a pie for lunch from the Uki Pies. The market is held every Saturday 8am-12.00pm.

As we experience some cooler weather, I wish you all the delight of a delicious gourmet pie, whether your preference is vegan, vegetarian or meat.
