The countdown to Valentine's Day has begun. Large red hearts will soon be replacing Australian flags in shops, and my letterbox is already overflowing with Valentine's Day specials. Those who believe that Valentine's Day is more about romance than crass commercialism say that Cupid is refilling his quiver and sharpening his arrows, and the scent of romance is in the air. If the romantic in you is looking to declare your undying love on February 14, then we have a few suggestions for the best places to do it.

Cocktails:
Romeo and Juliet had a great love, unfortunately matched by a marked talent for tossing down toxic tipples. Delete the suicide and deadly outcomes and spend your Valentine's Day imbibing delicious cocktails instead. We know you'll want nothing but the best for your love so check out The Best Cocktail Bars in Melbourne or try the very stylish Emerald Peacock Cocktail Bar or Left Bank Bar .

On the Water:
Perhaps your love is on the epic scale of Cleopatra and Marc Antony, who enjoyed some pretty spectacular river cruising in their time. While Melbourne can't quite give you the exotic mystery of the Nile we do have our own Yarra River and the delights of Port Phillip Bay to serve as a romantic backdrop for your Valentine's Day experience. So Get Nautical on Valentine's Day .

Dessert Restaurants:
Napoleon was a huge chocolate lover and always took chocolate with him on his military campaigns (maybe that was the real reason his hand was in his waistcoat - he was reaching for a chocolate bar). Perhaps it was a gift from Josephine, slipped into his saddle bags as a reminder of their love. If chocolate ranks highly on your couple's treats list then dessert restaurants, particularly the chocolate specialists, may be the place for you to celebrate Valentine's Day. Where is Melbourne's Best Dessert? should give you a few ideas, including the delectable KOKOBLACK .

Rooftop Romance:
Maybe you're more the Sam Baldwin and Annie Reed (a.k.a. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan) types and prefer romance on a rooftop Sleepless in Seattle style. Obviously you can't transplant the Empire State Building here just for the occasion, but you can choose from among Melbourne's many delightful rooftop venues complete with great views and vibes.

Well we've done our bit and provided some venues for lovers to celebrate this Valentine's Day. The romance? That'll be up to you.
