The great white shark has been stamped with that very cruel and ruthless label of being one of the most ferocious creatures that swims in the ocean. Unfortunately, the movie Jaws did not help their reputation, with hunting for the sharks becoming a sport soon after the release of this Hollywood thriller.
Up close and personal with one of the Ocean's Top 5!
While the great white shark can be classed in the category as a predatory animal, it is not the serial killer as the media portrays it. In fact, a shark cage experience will definitely highlight the true characteristics of these animals.
With a range of shark cage diving experience around the South African coastal terrain, choosing the one that ticks all the boxes is probably paramount.
For starters, you want to ensure there is a high degree of safety. You would not stroll through a lion's camp without a 'safety net' in the form of a car would you?
Of course the next question would be location. The experience would need to be close to where you are staying and have a measurable amount of shark sighting success. There is nothing worse than rounding up all the courage to step into the water only to see nothing.
The last question would probably be cost. While this is an experience and you probably would only do this once in your life, you would not want it to cost your life savings.
I booked a shark cage diving experience with White Shark Africa in Mossel Bay. This is one business that gives attention to detail. Safety was paramount with the location right near a seal island - the buffet area for great whites! Plus, it did not cost us a fortune. In fact it was more cost effect to have 4 of us experience this encounter than it would for one person in Australia. It definitely ticked all the boxes for us.
Of course while White Shark Africa offered us the most amazing experience, I could not help but wonder where is the best shark cage diving experience in South Africa?
