I know, the smart ones will already know there are only three, and they are all great. But I think each has their strengths, and as we approach Christmas, here are my thoughts about that. See if you agree?

Angelakis Brothers are technically in the market arcade, on the eastern perimeter of the grand old lady. They shine for range, for options, and I would always get my larger fish for the BBQ there, such fish as Ocean Trout, King Fish, Snapper and Barramundi. Angelakis Brothers always have plenty of staff on to clean and scale your selection. They also have a home smoked fish bar, with changing varieties all the time. I recently bought some beautiful smoked Port Lincoln sardines, and the smoked Bream is a favourite with Scrambled Eggs at my house.

Samtass Seafoods is my go-to vendor for shellfish and their freezer section. The location is on the southern end of the market next to T-Bar. Their annual load of frozen Mulloway (Butterfish) is the great value. There is usually a bulk deal on frozen packs, ideal for a larger gathering of family and friends. They have extended their meal offerings from freshly shucked Oysters at the window bar, to now include a fry bar just inside the market. Fresh, sensational traditional fried fare and a Seafood Chowder to make any workers afternoon sleepy.

Cappo's is the smallest of the three located on the northern end of the market proper. I go there for the best value Mussels straight from Boston Bay at Port Lincoln. I also get my flathead and Tommy Ruffs hers for freshness and value for money. Vongole with Goolwa Cockles are also on offer here at good value prices. Cockles with Spaghetti, garlic, olive oil and parsley is hard to beat unless you add a little fresh tomato as well. Yum.

You can find some exotic and exciting seafood and sometimes better prices in the freezer section of the various Chinese Groceries in the market, however for fresh fish and local variety you can't go past the traditional market stalls.

I feel a seafood Christmas coming on.
