Sailor Moon is a Japanese manga by Naoko Takeuchi about a school girl called Usagi Tsukino who fights for love and justice as a superhero called Sailor Moon. Usagi used to be an ordinary girl but then she met a talking cat named Luna who told her that it was her destiny to transform into Sailor Moon and fight against evil.
If you grew up watching Sailor Moon and want to start collecting Sailor Moon things, then I have good news for you. There is a huge amount of stuff out there for Sailor Moon fans to be able to collect from handbags to make up to chopsticks. Here is a short list of some of the things that you can purchase:
Available from: EB Games, Zing Pop Culture, most stores that stock Pop Vinyl. Price range: $18 - $54.99
Pop Vinyl are figurines created by Funko that have large heads and are styled to look like icons from pop culture. Sailor Moon Pop Vinyls came out in 2016. You can purchase each one of the Sailor Guardians, Tuxedo Mask, Queen Beryl and this special three-pack includes Neo Queen Serenity, Princess Chibiusa and Neo King Endymion. These figurines are the simplest Sailor Moon collectables that you will be able to find. A lot of stores stock Pop Vinyl. The best place to find these figurines would be EB Games in the Hay Street Mall. Sailor Moon Pop Vinyls cost around $19.99 for a single figurine and the three pack shown here retails for $54.99. These are gorgeous little things that look great on a desk.
Sailor Moon Figuarts are figurines produced by Bandai. These figurines have poseable limbs and come with changeable hands, feet and faces. Each figurine comes with a base and a stand and a set of face plates (each with a different expression on them), and hands and feet. The idea is to take them out of the box and experiment with putting them in different poses and expressions. These figurines are not suitable for children because they contain small, breakable parts. Some places over charge for these. I've seen them for as high as $300 at some toy fairs. Don't pay that much for them. If you shop around you should be able to pick up one for between $50 and $70 which I think is a fair price.
The Sailor Moon Prism Stationery Sets were released by Bandai a couple of years back. The ballpoint pens were modelled after wands and transformation rods from Sailor Moon and came in gorgeous, sparkly boxes. There was a blue and green Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune set, a purple and black Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn set, a black and pink Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon set, a Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon set and an Eternal Sailor Moon set. I fell in love with these when they came out. Look at the fine work done on the Tuxedo Mask pen. The detail in that glass rose is exquisite. I've never seen any of the Sailor Moon Prism Stationery Sets on sale in a brick and mortar store. You will have to go online to find one of these but they're worth the money and would make a fine addition to any collection.
Available from: Amazon US, Nippon Yasan, Tokyo Underground, and other online stores. Price range: $100 - $200
The Holy Grail is part of the Proplica range of Sailor Moon collectables. The Proplica Toyline came out in 2013 starting with Sailor Moon's Moon Stick. The Proplica Toys are designed for adult collectors and are made to look like life-size replicas of items from Sailor Moon. The Holy Grail was the fifth proplica release. It came out in 2016. It is 17cm tall and plays sound effects and background music from the anime and when you lift the lid up you can see the Silver Crystal inside. The Holy Grail is a beautiful piece and well worth the price.
5. Sailor Moon Crystal Star Compact
Every Sailor Moon fan needs their own transformation compact
Sailor Moon's Crystal Transformation Compact was the third release in the Proplica Toyline. It was released in 2015 and was modelled after Sailor Moon's Crystal Star Compact. The Crystal Star Compact measures 7.4cm x 3.7cm and is decorated in rhinestones and has a glossy, bright look. You can open the compact just like Usagi does in the show. The compact has the Silver Crystal inside and the same gold ribbon pattern just like in the manga and anime. The crystal lights up with a multi-coloured light and the compact will play music and a recording of the original Japanese voice actress for Sailor Moon, Kotono Mitsuishi, shouting "Moon Crystal Power, Make Up!" when you open the compact. The Crystal Star Compact retails for between $100 and $200.
