Where's the Best Russian Restaurant in Melbourne?

The main feature of Russian food culture is that the table is overfilled with so much food that no guest leaves underfed. Traditional Russian & Eastern European food includes Borsch (beetroot soup), Pelmeni and Vareniki (Russian style dumplings), Bliny (crepes usually filled with meat or cottage cheese or served with red caviar), Chebureki (fried turnover filled with minced meat), Olivie salad also called Russian salad, Holodets (jellied meat), Pirojki (pies filled with meat, potato, egg dip or cabbage), Herring, and Chicken Kiev. These dishes and many more can be tried at a Russian restaurant.

The majority of the Russian restaurants and Russian food stores are located in the South Eastern part of Melbourne. Most of the establishments have a set menu, which comprises of: cold entrees, hot entrees, main course with a few choices and desserts. Prices for the banquet dining range from $50 to $70 (depending on the restaurant and the chosen menu). Some restaurants offer an al a carte menu as well. BYO is allowed and most of the places do not charge any corkage fees. This is usually the case with the birthday cake as well.

One of the main highlights of visiting a Russian restaurant apart from the delicious traditional dishes is live music featuring pop Russian & English songs, as well as some old time classics, and a dance floor to party the night away. The most common reason for visiting a Russian restaurant is to celebrate a special event – wedding, engagement or a birthday party. Most places also provide a mobile catering service.

One of my old time favourites is the St Petersburg Restaurant located in Elsternwick, which was reviewed by our own Laura Woollett. The restaurant prides itself on serving great food and having a spacious dance floor. Matrioshka located in Carnegie also offers a spacious dance space and combined with good music usually attracts a younger crowd.

A newly renovated 12 chairs Restaurant & & #1057 ;afe nestled in North Caulfield is one of the few places that offer an al a carte menu as well as the banquet menu. This provides an opportunity to taste selected masterpieces of Russian cuisine without having to order a full banquet menu. In addition to Russian food the café menu also features Israeli & Middle Eastern cuisine.

At the Rasputin restaurant , located in Malvern you can sample some of the finest traditional Russian dishes such as Crapes with red Caviar, Russian Salad, Pirozhki, Bliny, Russian Antipasto and enjoy a live music band that plays Russian, Spanish, Hebrew and Yiddish music. Last but not the least is the Russian Accent situated in Caulfield. It is a small but cosy establishment with a great selection of authentic Russian dishes, which are available in an al a Carte menu as well as a set menu.

Now we want to hand over the discussion to you and find out what is in your opinion the best Russian restaurant in Melbourne.
