There are many picturesque spots to view the Brisbane River as it meanders its way through the CBD and surrounding suburbs. The best way to appreciate the relaxing powers of any river is to spend some time sitting right on its banks, and here in Brisbane there are a growing number of cafes and restaurants that allow you to sip your coffee, wine or beer while contemplating the ebb and flow of the river.

It is surprisingly easy to travel on the river by Citycat or City Hopper and stop off for refreshments at one of these excellent and highly recommended eateries listed below. They have been listed in order as the river flows and geographically divided into "up river" and "down river" to make it easier for those from interstate to decipher. You are most welcome to add any of your local favourites to the list and I hope you get to visit some of these venues soon.

1. River Cafe, Gallery of Modern Art:

As the name suggests, this cool cafe really overlooks the river. It is part of the Gallery of Modern Art and usually has a theme running with the menu in conjunction with the current exhibition. You can't miss the highly controversial World Turns sculpture on the grass nearby and maybe pop in to GOMA to absorb some culture while you're there.

2. Popolo, River Quay:

River Quay is part of the South Bank complex and has several great eateries, however Popolo is my favourite, with authentic Italian cuisine and a great vibe. It is a fun spot to sit and people watch any time of the day and by night the lights of the city put on a stunning show while you eat your antipasti.

3. Cliffs Cafe, Kangaroo Point:

The height of this breezy cafe offers panoramic views of the CBD and a unique perspective of the sweep of the river. Set amidst the Kangaroo Point Parklands, it is really an amazing location and is very popular on weekends.

4. Jellyfish Seafood Restaurant, Eagle Street Pier:

This venue is not technically a cafe, but it has some really impressive views of the River and The Storey Bridge. Specialising in seafood, this is the place to come for birthdays and anniversaries.

5. River Bar and Kitchen, Riparian Plaza:

The new Riverbar and Kitchen is one of the best places along the river to sit and eat and river watch. There are both outdoor and indoor tables offering great views of the passing water scenes and they serve excellent meals too.

6. Watt Modern Dining, New Farm:

Tucked beneath the iconic Brisbane Powerhouse, this little eatery always seems busy and understandably so. They serve great modern Australian food which is the perfect choice for anyone visiting New Farm Park or catching a performance upstairs. Children love climbing all over the "Flood" sign, which offers a little piece of history while you dine.

7. Eve's on The River, Teneriffe:

Eve's on the River have been serving divine meals right overlooking the Brisbane River for over ten years. They are very popular for breakfast, lunch or dinner and are often booked out for weddings and other functions. Be sure to have a long walk along the river side boardwalk after your meal to truly appreciate the amazing setting.

8. The Jetty Oxford, Bulimba:

This cafe can be easily reached by Citycat as it stops right at the jetty itself. You can wave at the ferries as they pass while you enjoy fantastic fresh local cuisine. The vibe is modern, airy and spacious in keeping with it's excellent location overlooking Teneriffe.

9. Byblos, Hamilton:

This Mediterranean Restaurant hides away at Portside Wharf, Hamilton. You can sit and watch the giant ships at anchor while you nibble delicious mezze. This is a great riverside spot to sit on a Sunday afternoon, listening to their live music and enjoying a cocktail or two.

10. Northshore Riverside, Hamilton:

Again, this cafe is located right at a Citycat stop, and is easily reached by way of the river. It has sensational views of the passing ships and larger boats as it is just down river from several ports. It is really special to sit while you eat, and see just how busy the river gets at different times of day. Take the kids to the little beach and "playscape" next door.
