Looking for somewhere close to the MCG or Etihad to have a meal before the game? Or anytime really - you don't have to be a football fan to want to know a good place to eat.
Melbourne Pizza Bar
First is the Melbourne Pizza Bar (MPB) at 181 King St, Melbourne. It's a stone's throw from Etihad and the pizzas are great. They also serve up pasta, risotto, seafood and meat dishes. The gourmet pizzas are yummy, my favourite is the Tandoori.
But best of all is the $5 glass of wine. No kidding, it was the most generous glass of wine I've ever been served and while it won't win any prestigious awards it's a perfectly respectful quaffing wine. Don't have more than 1 if you're the driver.
Pizzas range from S $8.90 to L $13.90 with the gourmet ones more expensive at S $12 to L $17.50.
Next is a little more up market but worth the extra coin. Bess Richmond is a handy 5 minute walk from the MCG. It's particularly inviting in winter with the open fire going. (For those of you who remember, it's where Wild Oscars used to be.).
The day we were there I had the Bess burger, 100% cape grim beef, gherkin, iceberg lettuce, bacon & fries at $22. I don't normally buy burgers but this was delicious. My husband had 300gm Cape Grim hanger steak, parsley potatoes, béarnaise sauce at $32.
The service is excellent and the atmosphere very cosy and inviting. I'd recommend booking.
Bess is located at 105 Swan St, Richmond. 9428 5999.
