There is much more to Portuguese cuisine than good old Nando's. Portuguese cuisine is rich, spicy and vibrant. It is a celebration of classic Mediterranean cuisine with influences from the Portuguese Empire era. Typical modern Portuguese dishes would have to include fish and seafood specialities such as Bacalhau, dried and salted codfish, the popular vegetable soup dish Caldo verde and meat and vegetable stews, such as Cozido and the pork dish Carne de Porco à Alentejana.

The most well known Portuguese sweet treat is probably the Pastel de nata, a Portuguese custard tart, but there is also the Bola de Berlim, the Portuguese take on the German Berliner, the traditional Fios de ovos, 'egg threads' in syrup and Arroz doce, a Portuguese rice pudding dish, which is finished with cinnamon and lemon peel.

In Brisbane, there are a number of Portuguese restaurants serving a modern variation on these classic dishes. One restaurant which makes the grade, but is not typically Portuguese (the cuisine is best described as Indo-Portuguese) is Goa-Doodle-Do Restaurant. Previously reviewed by Weekend Notes writer Carly Ogborne, this fusion restaurant has a great selection of Portuguese style entrées and mains, including Portuguese style Sardines, Arroz a Valenciana (Portuguese Paella) and Citrus Scallops (Portuguese Style Scallops).

Karma Waters Restaurant is another great spot for Portuguese cuisine. The menu includes chicken, lamb, beef and seafood dishes. Highlights include the Portuguese chicken breast, Oven-baked Portuguese beef and lamb curry, Portuguese lamb shank, Slow cooked Portuguese lamb shoulder and of course Portuguese Espatada.
