As Melburnians prepare to bid farewell to the year that has been and usher in the Year 2020, we have collated a list of the best vantage points in Melbourne for revelling in the New Year's Eve fireworks. On 31 December 2019, exactly at midnight, Melbourne's skyline will transform into a kaleidoscope of dazzling colours as fireworks spew out and engulf the sky, pervading the air with crackling sound and burnt sulphur smell.

1. Federation Square

On 31 December 2019, Federation Square will play host to the biggest New Year's Eve celebration in Victoria. There will be live musical and dance performances as well as a horde of family friendly activities.

Make sure you arrive early, so you can get cosy and soak in the festive atmosphere. Make a mental note that Federation Square offers a wide array of food and drink options, so you can grab something to eat before you prepare for the festivities. Not only will you be able to enjoy live action, you will also be able to catch the excitement on the big screen TV on the premises of Federation Square.

Federation Square is located right across from the Flinders Street railway station.

2. Docklands

Every year Docklands (surrounding Victoria Harbour) transforms into a hub for exquisite fireworks celebrations. Entertainment will kick off at 9pm, and will draw a curtain with an impressive fireworks display at 12am. As a popular destination for revellers, Docklands traditionally gets quite crowded so it is a good idea to turn up early, and pick a good spot to enjoy the night. Hop on a train and disembark at the Southern Cross railway station or jump on trams 70, 75, 11 or 48 to reach Docklands.

3. Kings Domain Park

King's Domain will be a hive of activity as visitors will gather for the coveted New Year's Eve celebrations. From 9pm, live performances will entertain visitors as the city prepares to bid farewell to the Year 2019. Fireworks at mignight is guaranteed to steal the show. Flinders Street station is the closest train station. Trams 1, 16, 3/3A, 6, 67 are one of the many trams that can take you to the Kings Domain Park.



4. Flagstaff Gardens

Nestled between La Trobe and King Streets, Flagstaff Gardens offers a wonderful vantage point for enjoying the fireworks display at 12am. Festivities will begin at 9pm. Take a picnic blanket, some goodies, your fun-loving spirit and find a comfortable place to park yourself for the night at the beautiful Flagstaff Gardens.

5. Treasury Gardens

Treasury Gardens will be the platform for the one of the biggest New Year's Eve celebration. A DJ will keep things groovy as the festivities commence at 9pm. As the clock ticks midnight, fabulous views of the flamboyant fireworks display will take everyone's breath away. Parliament station is the closest railway station to Treasury Gardens.

6. Footscray Park - Early fireworks display

Footscray Park will host family friendly celebrations and early fireworks display. Live entertainment and fun activities will kick off at 6:30pm which will enthral both young and old. Fireworks will commence at 9:30pm. Hop on the train and get off at Footscray railway station if you wish to visit Footscray Park.

7. Yarra Park - Early fireworks display

Early fireworks display can be enjoyed from Yarra Park, Melbourne CBD which caters for families and ensures that everyone can participate in the New Year's Eve celebrations. Free entertainment will commence at 7pm. Visitors will be regaled with live entertainment on stage as well as screenings on the big screen. Carnival games will be another highlight. Little ones will have a ball with kid's activities. Fireworks will start at 9:30pm. Jolimont railway station is located close to Yarra Park.

Public transport including trains, trams, buses and regional town buses are usually free from 6pm on New Year's Eve until the first scheduled service on New Year's Day. Keep an eye on the PTV website for the latest information.
