Ouma's Rusks, boerewors, koeksusters, biltong and melk tert. If these foods mean something to you, you're most likely a South African-born resident of Australia.

There are various specialist South African food shops in the Brisbane area, and there are an increasing number of general food stores that are stocking South African products. In fact, some big supermarkets have even begun to stock a favourite South African brand of chutney, as well as boerewors -- which, somewhat amusingly, is described as being uniquely Australian and is made by a company with the word British in it's name.

Amongst the specialist food stores is Kumusha African Foods, which stores South African foods, as well as products from other African countries. It has a store in Upper Mount Gravatt, as well as an online shop.

In Ormiston, you'll find SA Cafe, which has a range of South African products, and operates a restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and evening meals over the the weekend. It's best to keep up to date with their specials, particularly those offered in the evening, through their Facebook page.

In North Lakes, and on the Gold Coast and in Rockhampton, you'll find Springbok Foods. They also deliver to most parts of South East Queensland.

If you like to savour the flavours of chutney chips and dry wors, and you know of a great places to buy South African foods, please leave a comment below.

Hi Peter,

I am sure they will be happy to replace it. From which stockist did you buy? they do not supply Fitzsimmons meats in Carindale anymore.

Best Boerewors in Queensland is at the Fruit and Veg store at Mons Road, Forest Glen, Sunshine Coast. It's just off the Bruce Highway opposite 98 Fish in the little parade of shops there. Don't know the exact address, I just go there to get Boerewors and I live in Brisbane. It's well worth the 200 k round trip as they have the freshest vegetables too. You just can't buy better.

Just discovered a great little shop on the north side. It's run by a SA bloke, and it turns out he makes the biltong for the carindale butcher that everyone is raving about. He also has a great range of SA groceries, and offers samples and coffee to his visitors, great guy. His shop is 159 Samford Rd Enoggera. Freshest and best tasting biltong I've found in Brisbane.

The one place I will highly recommend to avoid is 'Springbok Foods in Nothlakes'. In December 2012 bought two packs of Ouma Boerewors as we had guests and were introducing the south african way of cooking the sausage. When I turned the sausage over, there was a 2" butchers blade that had broken off stuck in it. I took a photo, the wrapping and blade into the shop the next day to show her. Apart from the woman's rude manner, I forwarded the picture to her phone and recommended she take the rest of the packs out the freezer. That never happened. She did not even have the decency to offer me my money back nor have I ever heard back from them. It's been almost 9 months. As I was walking out, the woman still had the cheek to make a snarky comment to the customer she had at the time. I vowed never to go back again and warned my clients as well. I know I should have reported them to the health department but I don't like causing problems for new businesses. Never again. I won't ever make that mistake again. I will report it to the health department right away, as it was pointed out later by an inspector, if a pregnant woman or child had the misfortune to eat a piece with even just a small piece of the blade in, they could have died.

I purchased some biltong & stokkies recently from one of de Beer Meat's stockists based on a few of the above recommendations but was left rather disappointed with the quality and taste. I thought it was over salted whilst lacking spices namely coriander, and alot of sinew remained in the biltong so was basically hardly edible. Perhaps an unlucky batch?

Hi Cheryl,
SA Food on the Gold Coast can be found at these outlets:
Springbok Foods
13/3 Cottonwood Place
Oxenford, QLD, 4210 Australia
Tel: 07 5580 5299
Fax: 07 5580 5095. They do a good boerewors.
The bakery in Mudgeeraba sells biltong.
There is a Mike's Kitchen in Merrimac, for a night out in a familiar restaurant, for any South Africans "new" to the Gold Coast.
Been good reading your articles. Our kids were at the same pre primary in Hillcrest. Check out my articles under "Jackson" for the Gold Coast, as I think you will still recognise my girls. Cheers, Susan Jackson.
