An Indulgent Love of Pizza
I recently went out for my birthday and, believe it or not, I ordered pizza! This reminded me of how much I love pizza. I remember saying this on a number of occasions and on devouring a fresh hot pizza, thinking that it was the best ever pizza. I'm sure I've said that about all the pizzas on this list, so it started me thinking (and drooling) about great pizzas and where to get them.

I realised that on my 'Must go back and eat many more pizzas at this café' list' that there was something different about each that I loved. My teenage desire for thick pan fried Pizza Hut bases has almost disappeared. So this is my quest to explore what makes a great pizza and where the best can be found.

Plenty of green toppings… that makes it healthy right? Pizza from the Cube

The Cube Café
1/285 Diamond Creek Rd Plenty

Cube make fabulous wood-fired pizza and this was the most recent occasion for me to exclaim 'This is the best pizza I have ever eaten and I want to eat more, but I just can't fit anymore in.' I ordered a pumpkin and spinach pizza to share. Yes, I can share but I did order the large. When I saw the size of it, I even inquired about doggy packs, but I knew after one bite there was no way this would be necessary.

My sons' mocked the amount of green stuff on top but I admired the tasty toppings and it helped appease my guilty conscious when reviewing my New Year's Eve healthy living resolution. Last year's resolution was more appropriate, but that's another story.

Despite the children's ridicule of the veggie laden pizza, there were several requests to try it and I recognised the envious glint in their eyes when they did. The base was very crispy with a hint of quality olive oil. So the combination of toppings and the very hot crispy base was why the Cube wood-fired pizza makes this list.

Mango on pizza… what absolute genius! Pizza from Hamlets

Hamlets
720 Main Rd Eltham

It's not all they serve, but the wood-fired pizza is certainly a draw card. It's their most popular take away selected at Hamlets.

If I had my time again I would eat many more serves of their pesto bread. It had lots of mozzarella, basil, pinenuts, garlic and olive oil and was a very generous serving size. The breads are more like a soft yeasty pizza and very filling.

Having confessed my love for the bread, the colorful pizza was like eye candy and tasted delicious as well. Hamlets have some very unusual variations on the typical pizza menu, including sweet pizzas such as hazelnut and strawberry for around $12.

$7.50... are you joking? Pizza from The Commercial Hotel, South Morang

The Commercial Hotel
820 Plenty Rd South Morang

The smell of garlic wafted through the front door and I couldn't get enough of it. I remember when I went to the Commercial I said that it was the crispiest pizza base I had ever had.

I do declare that the Commercial Hotel pizza converted me from being a thick base pizza lover. Not only that but this pizza is a real bargain. At $7.50 you are not going to get one much cheaper when dining out.

The fast service and the playroom at the Commercial is another real advantage when taking kids.

The other meals are enormous, but I'm not going past the pizza. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take home left overs anymore, so we had to force ourselves to eat every last piece! Some sacrifices are essential.

It's all about the dough. Pizza from Cafe Bedda

Café Bedda
242 High Street Northcote

If you are looking for a great restaurant in Northcote, High St is the place to go. It's a virtual multi-cultural smorgasbord. Café Bedda is clearly authentic Italian from the waiters to the customers. Noteworthy are the waiters who were very patient yet attentive without being intrusive.

The pizza was unlike anything else I have tasted. It has a delicious puffy edges and the base almost wafer thin. It was cooked to perfection. I reckon it's the real deal Italian pizza that is hard to get anywhere outside of Italy.

I ordered the vegetarian pizza which was topped with eggplant, ricotta, mozzarella cheese and a lot more garlic than we had expected (but I adore garlic). In contrast to the Cube, I thought it was a bit scantly covered in topping but I was told this was purposeful. They do not want their diners to ever losing sight of the dough. Their pizza is all about the dough.

Café Bedda also make a Nutella pizza…. that's on my wish list. I just have to resist eating too much savoury pizza first.

Cafe Bedda is a fair dinkum, authentic Italian restaurant (it's not a cafe!) where you have to order the pizza. Or should I say fabulous Pizzeria e cucina Siciliana. Bellissima.

Dominoes
Stores everywhere!

Perhaps surprisingly Dominoes has a place on this list. It has a range of pizzas for just $4.95 (take away) and sometimes they have specials for an unbelievable $3.95 or two for $6! (on-line orders only). This includes Margherita, Cheese and Meat varieties. Dominoes have organised their pizzas into categories so that you can choose according to your budget.

If I have a house-load of teenagers, pizza is a cheap, popular and easy option and the kids actually thank me for dinner. Dominoes has a thick crust and some decadent desserts too. It doesn't matter where you go you can be sure to find a Dominoes and the quality is pretty consistent.

What do you love the most about a pizza? Please comment on your favorite pizza joint. I'd be more than happy to try it out.

'It's all about the dough.' ??? I'll leave this to doughy people. Since it's really all about the toppings and interesting and innovative toppings, I applaud Hamlets for adding mango. Pumpkin and spinach is good too.

If we're being serious about the "best pizza" I don't think there is a place for Domino's on that list. Don't get me wrong, I've ordered from Domino's countless times. But there's no way it can compete with other legit contenders. I understand why it's on the list though (ie. cheap and consistent) so I think at best it should be an "honourable" mention.

Here are a couple of my recommendations:

Mojo's Weird Pizza (Clifton Hill and Port Melbourne)
As the name suggests, they do weird topping combinations. Some are may sound a little out-there (offputting??) but give them a go. They are experimental as anything, but they know their stuff. They are good.

Pizza Mein Liebe (High St Northcote)
Great pizza bases - traditionally thin and crispy. Good quality ingredients, used in a multitude of great combinations. You can't go to this place just once. Or, if you do, take a bunch of people with you and get a variety!

Pizzingrillo (Port Melbourne)
Pizzas here are ~$20 range for a standard size...but they are excellent!!! This place does real, authentic Italian cuisine. Beautiful thin and crispy bases, with delightfully fresh toppings. Some might say they are sparse, but sometimes you just want real quality over quantity - the fresh flavours speak for themselves. Also, try the gnocchi - best I've ever had. With family recipes, the owners are warm and inviting, and passionate about giving customers a wonderful meal. I went there soon after it opened, and they were just delighted that my partner and I had so thoroughly enjoyed our meals. It's relatively new, and despite not having a alcohol licence (yet), it's definitely worthy of a place on this list.
