Do you love a good ol' Aussie pie? Who doesn't! The humble meat pie has been a favourite with Australians for many years - whether you eat one at the football, down the beach or stop and pick one up from your favourite country bakery, we can all appreciate a good meat pie.
Over the years, meat pies have evolved and instead of buying just a plain meat pie, you can choose between flavours such as butter chicken, lamb & peas and even kangaroo. Bakeries around the country have been trying out new flavour combinations - but what about here in Nelson Bay? The following pie shops and bakeries are some of our favourites in the area - where have you discovered? Feel free to leave a comment at the top of this article and share your local tips. One thing is for sure, you can never try too many pies!
Local secret - Baker's La Vie at Salamander Bay local shops
Baker's La Vie is located at the old Salamander Bay shops, on the way to Soldiers Point. It is a popular bakery with local tradies, families and workers, with people often seen pulling up out the front and ducking in to grab their favourite. There are about a dozen different flavours, with prices ranging between $5 and $6 each (at the time of writing). Some of our personal favourites include Pepper Steak and Curry Chicken - although whichever one you choose will be a winner. If you love a spinach and cheese roll, the Bakers La Vie recipe is also jam-packed full of flavour, with crunchy melted cheese on the top.
Whilst there, also pick up a cake slab, buy a caramel slice, pick up a healthy roll for lunch or a freshly-made loaf of bread. This local bakery is a one-stop shop for everything you need. See here for a map to find it.
Curry Chicken pie from Bakers La Vie - my personal favourite
Bayz Patisserie in Nelson Bay is another popular spot to pick up a pie for lunch, with tasty selection right in the heart of Nelson Bay. Each one is delicious, however, this is the only pie shop that we have found that makes a good Steak and Kidney pie, if you happen to like that flavour combination. It is a small bakery from the front, but big on popularity. See here for details and here for a map to find it.
Red Neds Gourmet Pie Bar is also located in Nelson Bay, just around the corner from the pie shop above. This gourmet pie shop is the real deal - it has over 50 flavours of pies that are cooked on the premises daily, with unusual flavour combinations that you may not have ever seen before in a pie. If you have ever wanted to try kangaroo, prawn, barramundi or beef stroganoff in a pie, then Red Neds is the pie shop for you! See here for details and here for a map to find it.
Have you found a good pie shop in the Nelson Bay area that isn't mentioned here? These are my personal 3 favourites, however, please leave a comment at the top of this article if you would like to share your local pick - because seriously, who doesn't love a good ol' Aussie pie?
