There is an abundance of striking and stimulating locations in Melbourne to test out your photography skills. Whether you have just upgraded your camera, are learning to use a SLR or are an old hand looking for a bit of inspiration, these suggestions will keep you snapping away happily for hours.



1. Butterfly House at the Melbourne Zoo

Capturing the perfect butterfly shot in nature is near impossible. A butterfly will flutter by, you'll get one or two goes at capturing it in the frame but then it is gone. In the Butterfly House at the Melbourne Zoo you'll get as many chances as you need to take the perfect butterfly pic.



Remember to wear layers if you plan to spend some time in the artificially humid environment. Dressing a willing subject, like a friend or a child, in brightly coloured clothing will attract the butterflies and encourage them to land. This can result in some fantastic shots.



2. Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanical Gardens covers 38 hectares just south of the city. Part of what makes this a great spot for photography is that it lends itself to both macro and sweeping landscapes shots.

Macro photography, that is taking extreme close ups, is a technique that is particularly effective when utilised on plant subjects. There are plenty of places to practise this technique in the Botanical Gardens from the Ian Potter Children's Garden at the main entrance to Fern Gully or take some shots of the reoccurring patterns of a succulent in the Arid Garden. Creative looking shots are sure to result.



The gardens are, of course, artistically landscaped and often the city skyline can be positioned in the background. Photographs that capture this are a fantastic counter to extreme close ups.



3. Hosier Lane

Street art is abound in the Melbourne CBD but Hosier Lane is the most well-known spot for admiring this free art form. Every available space in the cobblestoned lane is adored in some way including rubbish bins, gates and some windows.



The murals in the laneway change often so it is a spot worth visiting again and again.



As this location is a public street it is open day and night so it can be a good option for practising your night photography skills.



4. Queen Victoria Market

The Queen Victoria Market is the perfect place to perfect your food photography. The area in which the fruit and vegetable stalls are situated has intermittent light filtering in, illuminating some produce and throwing the rest into darkness. This can produce some interesting and artistic looking results.

It is also a good idea to check out the Deli Hall where cured meats hang above stalls, fresh pasta is piled high and marinated olives glisten.





5. Federation Square

If architectural photography is your thing the many odd angles and converging lines of Federation Square will keep you entertained for hours. Its design was much maligned when it was first unveiled however since its opening in 2002 the public space has grown on Melburnians and it is now a popular meeting spot.
The building's façade is a collection of triangles made from sandstone, zinc and glass. The unique geometrical design is striking and provides plenty of opportunities for abstract shots.
