Surprisingly, many people still wear hats. Some wear them only for special occasions, while others do not consider their outfit complete unless they are wearing a hat. For these people, and for those who are looking for hats for other reasons (a cute, funky hat has been known to cheer up many a cancer survivor while he or she is waiting for hair to grow back out), there are several New York City hat shops to choose from.

J.J. Hat Center, 310 Fifth Avenue

This is New York's oldest hat shop. It was established in 1911, and has been in business continually since then. J.J. Hat Center has just about any type of hat you can possibly want. Fedoras (these have lower tops than pork pies), berets, and pork pies (think the kind of hat your grandfather or great-grandfather wore) are just a few of the hats you can choose from.

Cap wearers can choose from Greek fishing caps, newsboys, roadsters, and other types of hats. (No baseball caps here, though. We're talking about dress hats).

The Hat Shop, 120 Thompson Street

The hats at this shop are custom-made. The milliners start with a basic hat design (or foundation) which you choose based on the occasion to which you will wear the hat, and then add the accessories (feathers, jewels, bands, and other things) to match your outfit or just your mood.

The Hat Shop carries basic hat foundations for weddings, a day at the races, evening wear, or travel wear. In addition, they have a classic category that will cover any event to which you want to wear a hat.

Ellen Christine Millinery, 255 W 18th Street # 1

The shop is named after the hat designer, Ellen Christine Colon-Lugo. The hats at her store are hand-made and literally matched to the wearer's personality. There are no "off-the-shelf" or "one size/design/whatever fits all" hats here.

Barbara Feinman Millinery, 66 E. 7th Street

After years of selling her hats to retailers, Barbara Feinman, the owner, decided to open her own shop. Today, she sells hats to celebrities and "ordinary people" alike.

This is another millinery shop where hats are custom-made. In the case of Barbara Feinman Millinery, the hats are made on the premises. This assures the customer that the hat will be unique to her personality or wishes, as well as of very high quality.
